Hello.
Some help if you please.

A neighbour's wife recently passed away. My neighbour is not well off and working at minimum wage. He has one 14 year old son still living with him in the family home.
His deceased wife worked part time and I know that he will find things difficult now.

Id like to help him out by providing any information regarding any social welfare supports which he might be entitled to apply for.

Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say he would be eligible for fis, does he rent his home?

He has been making interest only payments on his mortgage in the past 7-8 years.

i have found the staff in the local CWO very helpful at times ,maybe a quick chat to get pointers? the staff in citizens advice are really good as well

the widow pension,the household benefits package are some that sprang to mind
the best advice i have is to make sure you get the ok from the neighbour to approach on his behalf,the last thing that should happen is your good intentions be turned into a fallout or being see through pain as being nosey etc

FIS is Family Income Supplement

If there is a local citizens advice office, it would probably be a good start point for him to call in and discuss what might be available to him.

If there was a mortgage there should be a life assurance policy in place that pays off the mortgage on the death of one party.

The other option would be the widowers pension. Either way he should give the DSP's information line a call and they'll be able to provide him with assistance.
