If this is better off in the general fora please feel free to move it

I've never managed to play this game. Each time I've looked into it I get bogged down in research of which version to play alas here I am again.

I have access to PS3/360/one/wii (Could possibly run it in emulation on a pc)

With talk of missing fog, poor fps in HD collection etc.

    Which version would you recommend?

I played and finished the original version on the PS2, it was brilliant, frame rate, fog and everything.

Edit: it also scared the bejeesus out of me!

Whatever you do don't play the HD collection version. Absolutely spoils the atmosphere of the game, it's terrible. Play the PS2 or Xbox (original) version .

It looks like there's a few bugs with the original when played on PS3 legs missing.

I can't find any bugs related to directors cut. Do you know if the DC loses anything from the original?

Directors cut is probably the better version, that and the platinum release add in a new section with Maria as the playable character that is pretty good.

Just don't let Pyramid Head take you out on a date, you just know that guy is going to be a poor conversationalist and only be able to talk about a few things even then... damned soul this and damned soul that, the commute to Silent Hill from here, the poor quality of the health service there....

When you go to the hospital, and the nurses look like that, you know you're in for a rough time.

Wii? How did I miss that?

Finally a question Im in the know on lol, PS2 collector, and by fair the best version is Silent hill 2 "platinum" version on the ps2 "ps2 version is the best version and Silent hill 2 Directors Cut, is the best version, "unless you get the collection 2,3&4 on the ps2"

So if your to grab a copy the ps2 Directors Cut is the best option.

I have the stand alone copy of SH2 and the PS2 collection of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th games.
I also picked up the original for the PS but have yet to play it.

    Thanks all.

I ordered PS 2 Directors cut.

Hopefully will look ok on a flat as I've no access to a CRT

    Don't worry
It's not as critical a thing with 3D titles than it is with 2D sprite based games.
It probably wouldn't do any harm at all to watch out for a cheap or free Sony portable TV on Adverts or DoneDeal.
Also, pick up an RGB cable for the PS2, you'll get a much better picture, whatever your display.

And, lastly, keep in mind that the PS2 can also play PS1 games, so you can still play games like Micro Machines V3!

A RGB scart cable is the best place to start (or a component cable) for a PS3. Pretty cheap but will give an enormous boost in visual quality compared to rubbish composite.

    Master of the Universe

Every bloody year at Halloween I say I'm finally going to play through Silent Hill 2. The last two years in a row I tried and don't think I got further than 3-4 hours.

Still have that save on my PS2 so maybe if I plug in another 3 hours this year I'll have it finished by the end of the decade :D

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Not finished Silent Hill 2 or gotten 96 exits in Mario world...

(finish SH2, it's a masterpiece... that ending brought me to tears).

I managed to pick up SH2 recently on adverts myself, for like a fiver I think? I think it's time I finally tried the series. :]

That being said, I need to go through my cables and see what one I have for my PS2.. >__>

Surely we should all be playing it on a NTSC PS2? :D

Seriously though, what a stellar game, and a perfect time of year to play it. Its only when I replayed this game in my 20's that i really found a new love and respect for it

    Plus *SPOILERS*
I really like the fan theory that James has the body of his wife in the boot of the car :P

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Ugh, I hope that fan theory isn't true. It's too cliché. I expect a game with that much intelligence wouldn't stoop that low.

So I've decided to alternate between SMW and Silent Hill 2 at the moment. Probably two of the most contrasting games in existence :D
