Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events will play out on Friday the 13th of January 2017

Based on the best-selling novels by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris, the eight-episode series recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance.

Watched it all already, but I'd like to hear someone else's opinion. I'm wondering if I'm the books were popular here, I think I felt more strongly about them then Harry Potter as a child, even if Harry Potter had better narrative, ASOUE had the better worldbuilding and tone and subtext and imagery, for me.

I tried watching the 2004 film last night, but had to turn it off after 15 minutes or so. I found it incredibly annoying. Especially Jim Carrey, who I usually like. Is the Netflix series much better/less annoying?

I just finished it there. It was a fantastic family series, both my wife and son really enjoyed it. I do have some exposure to the books, in that my sister used to read them, and I read maybe the first five, but it's been a long while, so while I know of the concepts behind them, the actual stories had been lost to the mists of time for me!

It's definitely worth a watch. It's only 8 episodes, but it's really best watched in two episode stints, as each two episodes make up a self contained story (ie each one is a book) - The cast is excellent, particularly Neil Patrick Harris and Patrick Warburton. It's clever, funny, and it's layered for adults (there's a "petit mort" joke!)

Well worth the time, and I can't wait for season 2.

Yes. Jim Carrey was hyperactive and unrestrained on the movie. NPH plays Olaf as he is in the books, and the show is written by the author of the books.

I'm only 3 episodes in and it's fantastic. Neil Patrick Harris is amazing in this. Once again Netflix have found good kid actors. Great production values.

Look away, look away, look away, look away, this show will wreck evening, your home life and your day, every single episode is nothing but dismay so look away, look away...

    But I love it.

Fantastic news! Never read the books, but season 1 was a delight. Surprised how empty this thread is though; was it that under-watched?

I loved the first season same as I hadn't read the books or seen the Jim Carrey film so I wasn't sure what to expect from it.

Mod: I knew there was another (albeit equally small) thread on this show, so I've merged the two together. Another underappreciated show deserving of a wider audience

So according to Neil Patrick Harris, the show will wind up after season 3, and that this has been intentional from the get-go; apparently they're just sticking to the events of the books, which has enough material for those three iterations (apparently season 1 covered the first 4 books).

Makes sense and a nice change from other productions going way past the source material and out-staying their welcome.

That's reassuring to know. It's the reason I stopped watching it, thinking it would just go on and on. I'll go back and watch it now so.

    Very formulaic show. :(

Once you see one episode, it just repeated again in different situations.

2 and a half episodes in, I will probably continue watching in background mode.

After reading all the books, I do not really like the movie/TV series as much.

Saw some of the earlier episodes but after 20 million episodes I got tired of it;)

    Season 3 Available today?

I wonder will the keep to same formulaic as previous seasons, anyone re-tuning into this?

It reminds that I still have to finish season 2; I liked its whimiscal & quirky, theatre-stage quality to the show, but it's definitely wedded to a formula of repetition, so even in small doses, I kinda checked out the second time around.

Dear God I hated these books with a passion. My daughter was reading them and I did as well to have in common. God, the repetition

The thought of watching a TV series makes my skin crawl.

I'd have almost forgiven the author if (don't read unless you've read all the books
    )
the parents came back. I know the ending is "brave", respecting the readers intelligence etc. But give us a break.

I’ve watched the first two episodes of S3 and I’m enjoying it so far. :)
