This Ever Happen to Anyone?

Bought something in a shop with a card. Showed up on my online banking for a couple of days but has now disappeared. Also "No Pending Transactions" is showing. I'm guessing the error will be rectified shortly but just wondering if anyone has ever had a card payment not being applied to their bank account?

You don't complain when a debit transaction has disappeared from your bank account.

Maybe your bank transaction "search" only displays transactions from the current month. If you bought this item in September and it's now October maybe the transaction is archived in the "transaction history" like last month, last 3 months, etc.

    Just a thought.

Contactless payments take a few days to show up, they don't seem to appear in pending at all, just hit the main a/c as a charge after a few days.
    Sorry to disappoint you :)

    No, wasn't contactless.

There can be any number of reasons for this, but I guarantee it will show up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭Speedwell

It happens when at the point of sale the vendor applies a "test" charge to make sure the money is in your account before the actual sale itself goes through. The actual sale is timed to hit your account after the test charge has a chance to clear (it used to not be timed so well and people were complaining of overdrafts to their debit card). So what you saw was the test charge come and go, and the sale charge will be applied shortly.

Yeah, i'm sure it will too. Was just strange to see it applied to the account and then taken away.

Not exactly, there is no 'test'. It's called an Advice which blocks the amount on your account. This is what shows up as pending.
This ensures that the money is in your account and prevents it from being used in another transaction later.

There is then an authorisation sent (this can be days/weeks later) which is the settlement of the transaction, once that happens the transaction is completed.

That's in simple terms but there are lots of other factors.

As it initially appeared I would say the Advice was processed but then something triggered an Advice reversal which caused the item to disappear from the statement.

OK, I didn't know what it was called. I used to see it happen to my card all the time, though, particularly when I paid for petrol at the pump.

It'll show up eventually with a point of sale date underneath the date it hits the account. It's a pain in the ass when you need to keep track of spending!

mmm, the overall thrust of this is correct although the terminology and configuration is going to vary from bank to bank.

OP, assuming it was a 'pending transaction' that you saw - if the corresponding settlement transaction (as Boom Bap puts it) doesn't come in within a certain timeframe, some banks will remove pending transaction from your account after a couple of days. That doesn't mean you won't get charged for the transaction at a later date though.

Funnily enough, this happened to me today. I paid for a Dell laptop about three weeks ago, and I got a text from AIB asking me if they should put it through. I guess the amount was inconsistent with my average spending, so they just made sure it was me who made the transaction.

So that's fine. I assumed it had been taken out there and then, but I check the account a week later and there's no record of Dell ever withdrawing money from my account, and the laptop is on the way! I'm saying to myself, 'No way. I might be getting a free laptop here, lads'.

The man who processed the order was extremely Indian, and his English left a little to be desired. Aside from that, he also didn't inspire much confidence that he knew what he was doing, so I convinced myself that he's after making a mistake here. I'm impulsive, and pretty poor with money, so instead of waiting a number of weeks to see if I had got away with it, I end up spending most of the €900 which I specfically lodged into the AIB account, which is my secondary account. I blow most of it on clothes and bets and smokes and all sorts of sh*t in less than three weeks.

I check my internet banking today and I see a withdrawal of €835 from Dell Product and my heart sank. This isn't a big deal if you're a millionaire, but I'm not and all of a sudden I'm €750 DR. I knew as soon as my card was declined in a shop that Dell had the last laugh.

It was rather embarrassing because I don't have a card for my main account - because I'd end up blowing my savings on clothes and bets and smokes - and I had no cash on me. "Oh I must've left my other card, in my other wallet. I'll be right back." I didn't say that to your one, but it was awkward all the same.

I'm digressing. The bottom line is f*ck Dell.

    OP you may be lucky
    Long boring anecdote

Had a travel insurance claim, which was eventually settled, but they paid me with a € cheque drawn on a London bank.

    Paid it into Bank.
Few days later, letter from bank saying we need to "SPECIAL CLEAR" that item and blah, blah.

Then they credited me €86 in place of the €220 cheque. I was so mad, like a volcano  - but they never debited the original €220.

They still haven't 2+ years later

Yeah, I heard about this happening to some guy on Boards

I recently had a trip to eastern Europe (Poland) and upon collecting keys of apartment, was asked for a deposit of 1000zl, handed over my visa credit, then remembered the chip didn't work, so handed over my visa debit instead.

Next .morning, checked my account, and could see an inward payment from a company I had did some work for, and was expecting, and also a €237 deducted, which had me miffed.

One of my colleagues then reminded me about the deposit I had given to the apartment company. 100zl = €237 give or take.

Any way upon leaving Poland the next week, I handed keys back and asked for deposit, to which I was told that they don't actually take money, it just shows up a pending and would automatically be released back into my account.

Headed back home, and thought no more of it, until I checked a week later. Still not refunded.

Rang AIB who told me it didn't look like a normal deposit, but looked more like an atm withdrawal.

Now, the money was dedcuted the night I arrived, (about twenty minutes after getting there) and as my travelling companions all owed me cash, (as I paid for stuff up front) there was no need for me to visit an atm in Poland until 2 days after getting there.

It has been more than two weeks since I have got back, and AIB are insisting that the money is gone (left my account), the accommodation company are insisting that they didn't take the money. Someone has taken it, from somewhere.

Incidentally, I have the accommodation paid for via my visa credit, but the deposit was paid again on my visa debit.

Where do I go from here:confused:

Do you still have the receipt Alf? It'll say if it's a sale or a advice on it. If not, contact the apartment place and get them to check the terminals receipt role, the transaction will be on that.
That will tell you exactly what was processed.

I will get back on to AIB for the authentication code, but what has me confused is that it initially showed up on my account on the 15th of Sept @ 2145 local time. (Which would be when we arrived at the property)

But that now has changed to 16th on my statement.

No receipts (there was polish vodka taken beforehand:o) so might well have misplaced it.

It's a sizable enough sum of money to just vanish. I'm 99.9999% sure I did not visit an atm in Poland until Sat 17th.

    Its an odd one.

Booking.com are wanting my bank and credit card statements to try clear it up, not worried about the cc statement, but not comfortable giving my current account statement to anyone other than the accountant and bank manager. Certainly not emailing it to "customer care" in booking.com
