Oval cut / round cut engagement rings

    Hi,

My fianceé and I are looking at engagement rings at the moment. We've spent a good bit of time looking around and she thinks she likes either an oval cut or round cut ring. We saw a gorgeous one in Dublin, it's pricey though at 9000 for a 1ct but its D colour and VS1 clarity, so it's an excellent quality stone.

I'm still wondering if I could get this down to 8 or even 7.5 as that was my original budget, but if I can't I'll get the one we saw. I'd be very interested to see if people think this is good/bad value or could suggest jewellers where we might see something similar but cheaper.

    Cheers

I've just gotten my engagement ring and was looking at both. I went with the oval as it elongates the finger and without sounding shallow, it looks bigger!

Someone told me before I went looking that if you go for just under a carat so.90 it reduces the price dramatically and you wouldn't be able to notice the difference from the naked eye. We were also told that the carat is the weight and the length of the stone can give it the illusion of a larger stone so maybe check out some different stones.

I went with a D diamond VS1 also, there was no comparison with the colour!

Maybe another place you could cut back a few euros is the type of metal you get. I've gotten white gold instead of platinum as I would prefer a better quality diamond.

    Hope this helps!

Definitely consider going slightly under the 1 carat if you want to save money.

I'm looking for something similar at the moment, but thinking of trying to source the stone myself and then get the ring made.

Have you considered BlueNile OP? From what I can tell tehy appear reputable (US company but have an Irish base in Blanchardstown I think). I'm also considering a quick trip to Antwerp.

I have a similar budget to yourself and obviously want to get the most for our money.

I've just been on Blue Nile out of interest and you can get an oval, 1ct VS1, colour D stone for just under €5k. They have an image of the stone and then its unique measurements, ie depth etc.

They have loads on offer but thats the cheapest one that meets your requirements OP. I can't imagine it would cost €4k to get a jeweler to make a ring like the one you want.
