    Hi all,
Im looking for a new used car at the moment and have it down to two options.
    2008 For mondeo 1.8 diesel or a 2008 Mazda 1.6l petrol.

As far as I know the mazda pertol engines are pretty bullet proof.
Im just wondering about running costs.
The tax is cheaper on the modeo but which on has the better MPG.

I mainly drive 20 miles to work every day with the odd trip to Dublin or Cork.

I must have a saloon though for storage space.

What are yer opinions on reliability and running costs.

    Thanks

Sees like two very different cars, I'd have thought a Mazda 6 is more of a Mondeo type car

Had a Mondeo before and I wouldn't go back to them. They have issues with their injectors, costs you upto 3k to repair. Happened to me and I had to replace the car.

Wet belts are also an issue on the ford 1.8 unit very expensive to replace if needed.

Yeah I was originally looking at the mazda 6 but my mechanic reckons they are prone to DPF issues, he kinda put me off them.

How did you arrive at these two cars? The Mondeo is from the segment above the Mazda 3, the Mazda 6 is similar to the Mondeo whereas the Mazda 3 is similar to a Focus. Also if your considering a petrol car then why do you need a diesel? Does your driving style suit a diesel? Most diesel approaching 9 years old at this stage will have hefty mileage on them, your money will stretch further on an equivalent petrol car in my view.

We have a 03 1.8 Mazda 6 petrol. Bought it in 07. Never had any problems with it. We are changing it next year though.

bazz26, I originally had it down to the mondeo or mazda 6 until my mechanic kinda steered me away from the mazda 6. Its the reliablility of the mazda 3 that has me interested really.

To be honest I dont really mind what size saloon I get my main concerns are reliability and keeping the running costs down if possible.

Have a look at a honda civic. It's Better built than a mazda 3 and comes with an excellent 1.8 i-vtec engine which is extremely reliable and offers decent economy.

I think you need to start the process from scratch again OP.

    Start with petrol or diesel
Then figure how big a car you want/need

I don't think you need a diesel. Johnboys suggestion of a civic 1.8 is a good one. They're ridiculously reliable.

Those two cars are from different classes, you're not comparing like with like.

First work out what size/format of car you actually need, based on what you actually need it for, then work out if you need a petrol or a diesel engine to propel it based on your average annual mileage.

Why not Mazda6 1.8l? It's very reliable and revy engine...

A regular poster here had a second gen mazda6 and wasn't blown away by the quality of it. I think it needed a steering rack when it was very young.
