What are you opinions on the latest model of volkswagen passat.

Fuel Economy etc. Do you find it comfortable for long journeys.

The car is fantastic and as big a leap between models as I've known in terms of ride comfort, fit and finish etc.
The 1.6 diesel is in my opinion terrible. It sounds outrageous under load and is way too noisy in the cabin.
Very fuel efficient and reasonable when at speed but it would grow old very fast.
    Highline is a lovely spec.

Do you find the 1.6 very slow. Is it too small for the car.

    Any figures on fuel economy.

Was thinking of getting one on pcp
    Any known issues or problems

Depends what you are used to. It's better than the 1.6 in previous passat but I just find it very harsh. Drive one. You might find it perfect. I detest the vibration you get through the clutch etc but diesel drivers just get used to.

We have a 2.0tdi and a 1.6 tdi in the house and the 1.6 isn't really that bad, bit again depends what your coming from. It's true that you need to wind it up a bit to get the most from it but I haven't had an issue on the motorway etc with it. The 1.6 is a lot more economical than the 2.0 too. My advice is to take one out on a good spin and see what you think.

As for the car in general, get a well species one and it's a nice place to be, get a "famine line" :) bog Base model and it's a bit dull. Driving wise they handle well and have great road presence.

Personally, I think that unless you are pottering on N roads all the time, stay away from the 1.6. I know people that have the 1.6 in Octavia's and for regular mix of driving (N roads and Motorways at the speed limit), they get worse economy than 2.0 Octavia's for the same journey.

An example of that was I followed a friend from Cork to Athlone in a 2.0 diesel Octavia while he had a 1.6 diesel one. We both travelled at or "about" the speed limit up the M8 to the Horse and Jockey and then cross country. I got over 63mpg in the 2.0 while he got about 55mpg in the 1.6.

The new Passat is a stretched Golf platform. Reliability, etc should not be a problem. The only thing is that platform can be sensitive to tyre choice in my experience.

63mpg is very good and I would consider 55 mpg to be good as well . Would the passat be a heavier car and would 55 mpg be typical of the passat fuel efficiency.

how much would a passat cost on tyres and car service?

    Interested in this thread also...
Thinking of purchasing a Passat estate for the new year.

This model has been out since 151, - just wondering how long the passat lifecycle tends to be and how long more one could expect the current model to remain current?

Also, how is resale on the passat in general, - just a little concerned it may suffer due to being a popular "fleet" car

VW keep their models out longer than most, the last model Passat was launched in 2005 with an extensive facelift back in 2011. I'd expect similar with the current model, will probably get a facelift in 2019 and full replacement in late 2022 or early 2023.

    Any more opinions on this.

I've been driving a 2.0 TDI 150 BHP manual for last few months brand new comfort line and it's an absolute pleasure to drive. Plenty of power when needed and lots of comfort. Fuel consumption is 50-55 MPG. It lights up beautifully inside at night also. I regularly travel for 3 hours straight without stopping and you really forget about the fact you've been sitting in a car for that long! I would consider DSG next time but the manual box is very smooth also.

Ps I know someone driving the 1.6 TDI and he hates it. Would recommend the 2.0 TDI and the economy on fuel is as good as you'll get for the power as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭kala85

Drove the two litre and thought it was great to drive as well whereas the 1.6 was sluggish taking off.
1.6 seems to be more economical but I'm trying to decide between the two.
Two grand in difference on price.

Any feedback on what both cars are like on the motorway.

Any common problems arising and what's the warranty support from volkswagen like.
Is the service pack worth buying.

A bit off-topic, sorry....but I have an A4 petrol, 1.4 TFSI Stronic with 150 ps and while not as economic as the 2.0 TDI, I recently got an average of 48 mpg. while driving (fairly slowly) around Donegal. Like the Passat, it is very comfortable and you can sit in it all day without a hint of a back-ache. First car I could ever do that in. I think the 1.4 TFSI is a great engine and very quiet too. Automatic in the Passat or the A4 is the way to go imho.

Salesman says the same and recommends the dsg gear box as well.

How would the skoda superb compare against the volkswagen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Wollwead

Well I'd love if economy was not a factor I would be all over the 2.0TDI 4motion 240BHP Passat. The 190 BHP is not available in Ireland for some reason.

Have you seen a base spec a4?

Have you seen the highline Passat in comparison?

How would they compare for price. I presume that they would be a lot more expensive.

An A4 SE is €44,500 and has less equipment than a Highline BE Passat.
It is an Audi though, so it's ok that it's €7,500 more expensive despite not really being any better.

Superb is a great option actually. Slightly bigger inside and very similar interior but the Passat handles better and has slightly better mobility in my opinion.

The gap is smaller than it used be in terms of the interior, same with price though. Personally I prefer the superb interior but it's more down to personal preference.

The new Superb is a class act, with the spec upgrades the Passat has though, it's no longer the value alternative. Not sure what I'd get TBH. If it was a company car and someone else was paying for it it'd be the Skoda, if it was my money it'd be the Passat. The SKoda is certainly more stylish.

Agreed and with either one you're certainly not going to miss out on anything. Both give you much better value (and size) than the A4 as well. Identical engines also.
