Just to see if anyone knows the answer to this here.

At underage a full court press is not allowed in certain circumstances and the defence has to retreat to the backcourt. A point guard carries the ball to the halfway line but before crossing the defence reaches out and steals the ball. Violation? Yes or No?

Playing man 2 man defence is manditory up to U14. Does 2 defensive players trapping the ball carrier in the corner violate this rule?

    Thanks

If the defensive player is standing in his own half then no its not a violation.

The rule (as far as I know) is that the person with the ball can be double teamed. Once he passes the ball then he must again be left to be marked by 1 player. The problem is that some coaches and refs think you can't double team at all.

By the way, if this is Lions V Ballincollig U12 from last weekend (as both the above happened), (1) He was in his own half and the steal was good, (2) The coach was wrong to start shouting you can't double team and the ref was wrong to pull the defense up about it. He went further the next play when he stopped to ask a player who was he marking and to go back to him. If you draw a straight line from basket to basket, as long as the defensive player is on the same side of that line as the opposition player he is good. So the defensive player can stand inside the key to give help even if his player is outside the 3 point line as long as they are on the same side of the basket.

    Thanks for that.

No it wasn't that match. Saw the steal on two occassions both times when the mercy rule had been invoked and it didn't help the losing teams confidence. Was on the receiving end and the giving end one time each.

On the trapping the ref was warning the coach but it didn't make sense as it seemed good basketballing to learn to trap and escape a trap at underage. This was a close match so could understand it being called if there is a large score differential when many violations can be unofficially ingnored.
