Liable for back tax?

So I sold a car to my dad last year, as I never declared it off the road, and it had quite a bit of back tax owed (like €600 or so) Since then it has sat in his driveway running up more back tax ( must be like 900 more)

Anyway I was under the impression that if he sells it back to me, I'll be back to zero on the tax. Is this still true in 2016?

Reason is my new car packed it in and I would like to put this one back on the road but am afraid I'll be hit for back tax

You don't even need to sell it, just change the owner to reset the tax.

You'd be amazed many people are selling cars to family members who then think better of it and buy the car back ;)
