Deepwater Horizon

Based on the events of the 2010 drilling rig disaster, this came out yesterday in the cinema.

It was very good. It took a while to get going - like the good old disaster movies from the 70s, they put characters first.

Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson all played their parts well, especially Malkovich (who I hadn't seen on screen for years) and Russell.

The special effects looked great too - lots of practical effects mixed with CGI - more info here.

I had to smile at how 'Hollywood' some of the casting was, especially when you see at the end what the real Mike (Walhberg) and Felicia (Hudson) look like at the end of the movie!) :)

    Worth a look.

Saw this yesterday evening on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Firstly, the whole process of what the Deepwater Horizon vessel does is explained very well without being patronising. Wahlberg, Russell and Malkovich are good value as everyday work man, grizzled veteran and evil corporate goon respectively. Hudson is inoffensive and plays her role well.

Film itself is super suspenseful, has some really visually impressive action scenes and some emotional moments too when you realise all this actually happened. Its just about timed perfectly too, and isn't overly long or short. Favourite film I've seen in the cinema so far this year. Highly recommend it.

I thought it was excellent, but would have liked to see more about the process to fix the broken pipeline which took 3 months to fix.

Saw it last night, and thought it very good. As Ken above says, they could have shown more of the aftermath, both the pollution caused and the repair effort.
Hadn't planned to see it, just picked a film at random, and didn't even know what it was going to be about or anything about the cast. Took me a few moments to realise Malkovitch wasn't actually "whispering" Bob Harris!
