To Q or not to Q?

    Hi Boardies
I inquired to Sky last night regarding Sky Q and was looking for opinions from Boards members who have it installed.
    My concerns are:
    1. I only wireless broadband (approx 5Mb) so am not sure if that is enough for the extra box you get with install for multiroom?
    2. My main TV at the moment is only HD Ready, so would I see the benefit of Sky Q on this tv?
    3. Price is €15 per month on top of what I am paying at the moment so is the increase in price justified?

    Any opinions gratefully received.
    Thanks

I personally haven't gone for it, because as nice as "fluid viewing" and being able to record 4 programmes while watching a fifth are as features, they're not worth €16 a month extra. I appreciate that for larger families where there may be fights over the TV these features might be worth the price of admission alone, but in my household they just aren't needed at present.

I'd struggle to find four programs I'd want to record while watching a fifth tbh.

Was considering getting it myself but it doesn't really justify the extra cost when everything gets repeated anyway.

Think I'll pass.Sticking with my trusty Sky hd box and magic eye set-up.

Thanks for the replies, i forgot to mention that my current sky hd box ( a refurbished one installed by Sky approx 16 months ago) is now starting to give trouble again by not series linking and being slow and unresponsive.

I have Q and would recommend it highly. Just to answer your questions.

    1. Broadband speed has nothing to do with the extra (mini) box as this connects wirelessly to your main box and is only affected by the speed of your internal wireless network. Your BB speed will only have an affect on downloads from boxsets and on demand. I have 5 meg BB myself and while downloads are slow I usually put them going overnight so will be ready next day. When you say wireless BB is this via a dongle or do you have a router with wifi within the house?

    2. You won't be able to watch UHD broadcasts everything else will be the same as with Sky+HD.

    3. As regards price, only you can say if you can justify it, but it's worth it for me anyway.

What about last night when sports fans had Ryder Cup golf/PL football/ 2 Pro 12 rugby games and Aviva Premiership rugby on 5 different channels?

    Hi

If you are a new sky TV customer with no equipment or dish etc, must you get sky q? Do sky still supply Plus HD boxes? A friend of mine was told when enquiring by phone that they only do sky q. Is this correct? What are the advantages and disadvantages or these boxes? Can you switch your viewing card to another box with sky q? Will the sky q box work FTA with no card?

    Hi
I don't want to start a new thread. I got Sky Q installed today. Everything going great at the moment except for one problem.
On my old HD Box, I had my Saorview signal coming into the sky box and then going back out again to give saorview to the other tvs in the house. The Sky Q box does not allow the cables to be put in so now I do not have saorview working.
How can I go about fixing this please?

Does any programming, especially live sport in UHD get transmitted over satellite? Do you need high speed or fibre broadband to receive all UHD broadcasts from Sky?

Live sport is only over satellite. Movies etc are not broadcast in UHD, instead you must download them for viewing.

Assuming you have a cable from the aerial to the TV point simply fit a distribution amp to the end of the cable and connect the feed to the rooms to an output of the amp, example http://www.freetv.ie/proception-2-way-tv-amplifier/

If it was working previously then none of that is necessary.

Just connect the two ends of the coax cables that used to be attached to the sky+ box together.

Depends on the number of TVs he's feeding and how good the Saorview signal is I guess without the Sky box loop-thru. One of these co-ax joiners would be the easiest and cheapest solution if it works, should be able to pick one up locally.
