Just wondering - is it actually required for us to pay this tax?

Quite a hefty chunk coming out per month for this and just wondering if this is a tax that we are legally required to pay

Have looked around online for answer but just see similar discussion forums asking the same question.

Have asked the union for an answer on this and currently in my 4th week of waiting for a reply. So effective.

    Thanks

where do you work? this isn't a tax that the normal man in the street pays so it sounds like a particular levy for your employment. The normal taxes are PAYE, USC and PRSI.

If you are referring to your pension contributions, that is not a tax. If you are paying into a pension scheme through your work, the people who organised it for you would be the only ones who can tell you how your scheme is set up.

Widows and orphans is a deduction taken from some civil/public servants to pay into a fund for insurance for widows and orphans of employees who die

It's not a tax but a condition of employment I would say?

If you only started this deduction recently , it should be optional and talk to payroll dept about it .

If you started paying this pre 1995 , it is compulsory deduction with some county councils anyway.

I know a guy paying this since 1980 and he has no kids/ wife.

He queried it and was told it must continue with it to retirement
