Am a Virgin Media customer with the old UPC Horizon box where the TV set top box and the broadband router are rolled into one.

However in the evenings there is chronic slowdowns and I think this could be as a result of too many devices being connected to the Horizon box.. What's the max advised amount of devices using the box at one time?

Call them up and get them to send you the new wireless router should massively improve things.

Is there a cost involved with this?

Not if you call up threatening to cancel due to bad wifi performance. Normally they will offer the new router for free, plus 3 or 6 months half price or something similar.

Only catch you have to sign up for another 12 months.
