Heard Ad on radio that was promoting getting your car tested before due date.
i thought it meant that if you got your car tested early, mine due in Jan2017, that your next due date would be the same i.e. for me jan 2019. So i got my tested in Sept 2016 and my NCT cert is up on Sept 2018? did i misread the Ad?

No, valid to Jan 18. They can't give a cert for less than 3 months

You tested 4 months early, not 3, if you test earlier than the 90 day early window next retest defaults to 2 years after the date you tested, not 2 years after the mandatory due date.

When was the actual due date in January 2017? The 90 window should have been taken in October, not September.

Unless you're selling your car soon and want a shiny new NCT cert to help with the sale, the only time it makes sense to do the test more than 90 days before it's due is to get a 2 year cert before the car hits the 10 year milestone when you would otherwise start getting a cert for 12 months.

If you do the test more than 90 days before it's due, the cert and next test date will be based on the date of the test so if your car will be 10 years old in March 2017, you can do the test in Nov 2016 (i.e. more than 90 days early), you will get a 2 year cert and your next test will be due in November 2018 whereas if you do the test within 90 days of it's due date (e.g. Jan 2017), you will get a one year cert and the next test will still be due in March 2018 because doing it within 90 days is the same as doing it on the due date.

Yes you did, if you did it in October you would only have got until January 2018.

Yes you did do the right thing, had you tested next month you would have a January 2018 due date, you now have until September 2018 so you gained an extra 8 months by testing 4 months early.

    Hi
    I've a 17 year old car.
Can I test it anytime within 90 days of due date and get a cert for 12 months after due date

    IE: Test due March 17
    Pass test Jan 17
    Cert valid til March 18

Have I got that right? Thanks
