No, sounds like a pain in the ass, possibly coming from Facebook? You can block senders.

I've never got any ads during WhatsApp. Have you got the latest update?

Got a big message from Google about 10 days ago informing me that they were putting ads on WhsatsApp. Got an option to agree or decline. Guess what I chose:D. I'm not getting any ads so far anyway.

Why would Google be contacting you about whatsapp? How did they contact you?

    Seriously?!

So much for the "we will never sell ads" line WhatsApp has always abided by.

Was it an interstitial ad? Thought those feckin things were long dead

Isn't that just saying Whatsapp will be used to provide better ads in Facebook? Didnt see them mentioning ads in Whatsapp.
Will there be ads on WhatsApp now?

We still do not allow third-party banner ads on WhatsApp.

In the future, we will explore ways for you and businesses to communicate with each other using WhatsApp, such as through order, transaction, and appointment information, delivery and shipping notifications, product and service updates, and marketing. For example, you may receive flight status information for upcoming travel, a receipt for something you purchased, or a notification when a delivery will be made. Messages you may receive containing marketing could include an offer for something that might interest you.

Companies are still using that bull**** line about ads actually being useful or interesting for consumers...

are you sure its the official app you downloaded? Ive just started with Android(my 2nd phone to a Jolla). For official apps I go direct to the relevant website and use their google store link rather than searching the google play store.

A few weeks ago Whatsapp changed some terms and settings on their app. I think it was August.

Basically they wanted to use your info and "connect your mobile number" to Facebook. Facebook spent a fortune buying Whatsapp and now its payback time.

There was an opt out at the time that stopped Whatsapp from doing this. If you did not do this Whatsapp will stream ads as per your facebook settings.

Maybe change some of your facebook settings, remove your mobile number from facebook and see if you can uninstall the last version of Whatsapp.

Is this a fact or guesswork? Whatsapp's terms linked further up the thread said that whatsapp would be used to target ads in facebook. No mention of ads in whatsapp, and I've never seen an ad myself.

Don't use the facebook app, don't have my phone number on facebook. Not really likely to be bothered by this.

But it does beg the question...

...how can text messaging be used to determine targeted advertisement?

It's not as if whatsapp stores cookies tracking the items or various online stores we browse through.

They can track people who have your phone no in their mobile. They will make assumptions based on that.
