Bought a second-hand car

    A quick question or two.

I bought a 1.5 year old car 3 weeks ago from a (reputable) main dealer, I was told it would be valeted and serviced before I got it, they had almost 3 weeks to do it from deposit to collection.

After driving it for a week or so I noticed a few things that should be done in a service didn't look new, so went looking for the service book, there's none, it's an "online" one, so I finally got around to going to another main dealer to ask for it.

The last service was done in January, and had done 2000km up to when I bought it.
A service is due every 12months or 20,000km. so 4 months to the next one.

    My questions are.

Should the car have been serviced as I was told it would be?

As it's only done 2000km did it have to be?

    What would you do?

    What did you notice?

seems to me it has a full service history, not much point in doing a service after 2000km I'd have thought

    What did you notice?

Washer fluid was 3/4 full, tyres under inflated, air filter wasn't clean and flies in it were well crispy, little things.

Just that I was told it would be serviced, not the service 8 months ago will do you.

the cabin air filter or the engine one , the rest of the stuff isn't even really a service item at all. they probably just did an oil change, if even. If they haven't id be getting it serviced and try make them compensate you for that.

Just verify if they've done an oil change. If they haven't, get them to do that.

    Sorry, engine filter,

The main dealer I went to said anything that's done will be logged, nothing has been logged since the January service. which is titled "Latest visit".
Surely they wouldn't do an oil change without logging it.
(The oil at the moment is up over the full line when cold)

get the garage to do an oil , oil filter, air filter , (if diesel , fuel filter) change. It appears they haven't done as they said. After that I wouldn't be worried.

No point in servicing a car that's done 2000km in 8 months since last service.

If they said it would be serviced before handing it over, get them to agree to do the service in 4 months, then you keep it serviced on schedule.

Oil change should be done regardless if the interval says 12 months. The other items I wouldn't worry about as they are more mileage than age related.

Second hand dealers use "serviced before you collect it" as a sh1tty way to stop you getting another €200 of the sale price, when all they do is change the oil and oil filter with the cheapest one they have to hand. And half the time they don't even do it.

So don't expect anything else to have been looked at. But I would be demanding an oil change if a service was promised.

I'm sorry but your just taking the piss aren't you? The washer fluid was low! The tyres were soft! You are fecking joking aren't you!!!!

The air filter gets dirty when it's used, that's its job, to filter the dirt and keep it out if the engine.

I'm not engaging you anymore as this is a wind up!

CJC, The OP requested that the car be serviced when collected. Garage seems to have agreed.
Things like low washer fluid and soft tyres would indicate that the car didn't even have a basic lights and levels check, never mind the service promised.

The car has ultra low mileage, who knows how many stop/start journies it's done in the last 18 months without the engine even heating up. Should the op assume the service has been done and leave it another year from now to do an oil change?

OP was promised a service and a valet. Looks like he got the valet and the dealer didn't even lift the bonnet.

    Dealer taking the puss.

Fair bit of money I would imagine too.
At the dealer- ' Don't mess with your reputation.....send the car out the door in a fit & safe condition and as agreed ' you scabby git.

I was told the car would be serviced before I got it,
Car was almost E25k, the tax disc expired in March, so possibly off the road since then, except for test drives
I get it 8 months into the 12 month service interval, if they do the next service free, I'll be happy with that.
Going to pop out to them today, they aren't local to me, which is why I went to the other main dealer for the service print out.

    Thanks for the replies.

I really hope you aren't in car sales.
If I was handing over 25k for a car and was told it was going to be serviced, at the very least i'd expect sufficient fluid levels, on all fluids!!
Checking tyre pressure and washer fluid is basic stuff that should be the first thing done, then new filters and oil change.
An air filter won't be dirty if it is freshly serviced.
Also, soft tyres leads to premature wear.
If they can't do the basic maintanence that was promised then how can you trust them with bigger things?
Please don't engage anymore if this is your input :D

I think the OP has made some fair points, especially when handing over €25,000. And not just a basic service, I'd be expecting a full service, checking everything.

The last time I bought a second hand car from a main dealer they told me their policy was to give every car a full service before it went out the door but as the last service was only 2000km back I could wait until the next service was due and bring it in then. This is the level of service you should be expecting when paying main dealer prices.

mileage is irrelevant.. if the garage said they would do a full service before the car was collected, then the garage should honor that...
the OP has spent a lot of cash on this and should get what he agreed to buy....

like the garage i bet would not give the car to the OP till he paid all the agreed money.... they wouldnt accept that so why should the OP have to settle for something less....

You're spot on, that's what I was told, It was booked in for the service by the sales guy and they deemed there wasn't sufficient mileage on it since the last service for a full service (albeit early this year) it was given a once over to check relevant fluid levels etc and sent back to sales. If I was told that in the first place fair enough, but I was told it would be serviced and it wasn't. But I got a (verbal) we'll look after you on the next service.. hmmm.

I would be careful with that. That doesn't mean you will get a free service, that you should, as you did not get one now. It looks like they are trying to pull one on you, and they will give you an air freshener when you bring the car for service next time (at dealer prices)
I would not be happy at all.

Not every dealer is like that. When I went back for my service they spotted that one tyre was a bit old but still had plenty of thread on it and replaced it FOC.

Oh I know, as it was verbal, the guy who said it may not even work there when the next service is due.
The garage isn't the closest main dealer to me it just had the colour and spec I liked, so always the chance I wont be seeing them again either.
