GPU Upgrade

Hey peeps,

After many years I'm thinking of upgrading the gpu on my rig.

current specs:

I5 2500k @ 4.5ghz
8gb ddr3
650w Superflower psu
AMD HD7950
Samsung 120gb ssd (windows 10)
Samsung 250gb ssd (Prepar3D)
Seagate barracuda 2tb (steam games)

I was thinking of a nvidia Gtx 1070 or Gtx 1060 6gb (AMD doesn't play nice with Prepar3D)

Is the current specs okay for a gpu upgrade or will it have issues with cpu plus is the psu sufficient?

PSU is plenty but the CPU will bottleneck it in newer games like BF1.

It'd still be worth it, and of course you can upgrade the CPU down the line.

Honestly i think your still good with the cpu and psu. A 1070 will play nice with that rig.

Thanks, it's mostly simulation games I play, Prepar3D is cpu hog but I'm upgrading to kabylake i7 next year hopefully.

2500k won't be a bottleneck as much as people cry. It will depend on what resolution you play or what frame rate you want.

If op wants to play 1080p and aim for 144hz/fps, then 1070 will bottleneck, but 1060 will be grand and there won't be much of it.
If op aiming for ultrawide 3440x1440, 1440p or 4k, then he will bottle neck 1060, 1070 and even 1080 way before he will bottleneck 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz.

Op, what resolution you playing and what games? You say simulators? In that case cpu itself would be more of an issue and would make more sense. If you playing 1080p, then buy 1060 and keep the rest of money for new cpu/mobo/ram bundle. If you are aiming for 1440p+ go with 1070.

I have 2500k 8GB with 1060 and using 3440x1440 panel. Was planing on selling 1060 and getting 1070 after monitor upgrade, but after seeing how well my system handles all my games on that resolution I decided to wait for new amd cards next year and get one more SSD instead.

Prepar3D, New forza horizon, trainsim 2017, GTA5, Euro truck sim, metro last light, Kentucky route zero, watch dogs, vanishing of Ethan carta, minecraft.

As mentioned I hopefully will Be upgrading to kabylake next year

If you smart enough to put away money for new cpu bundle, then get 1060, it's plenty for 1080p just go 8GB not 3GB version. If you got money to spend and you know that your extra left over budged by buying 1060 will go on drugs, alcohol and loose women, then blow it on 1070 and you might upgrade to nice 1440p screen later on too.

Just too note: you better off buying from overclockers gpu, a lot of them are cheaper and often include free shipping. Amazon right now very weird with gpu pricing.

Gigabyte are getting tons of flak at the moment over how shoddy the non 1070/1080 versions of that card are. It seems they went super cheap on some components of the AMD versions so I'd seriously look into reviews of the 1060 version. Now this may only effect AMD cards due to lower profit margins but it put me off choosing them for a 1070.

That's the one I got. Its nice, quiet and runs very cool, but it has voltage locked ( or I don't know where to unlock it) . Kind of pissed me off as why would you put 8pin and give good cooler if you won't let overclock it. On the other side it actually overclocked nicely with just power target. There are some reviews on youtube of particular model and it does looks good.

Edit: it's too expensive for 1060. I got it as I needed gpu asap as my 680 died. 480 and other 1060 were out of stock.
I see some people mentioning some issues with this cooler, but I had no issues at all with mine.
