Not going to get away before year end...will have weeks holidays in early 2017 late feb -early march....was thinking of going to Faro around this time or somewhere with a bit of heat if possible ..looking at aer lingus today from Dublin circa 80 each return....family of 5...
Any thoughts around weather that time of the year and where would be good to look for self catering around Faro for a family or alternatives??.

We stayed at the Real Marine Apartments in Olhao, about a 15 minute drive east of Faro. There are some great beaches that side of the coast and a bit of adventure for kids getting to them,

The weather is hit and miss. It won't be particularly warm and there will be a bit of rain. It'll be better than here but it wouldn't be a sun holiday.

Op you could hit a whole week of rain in Feb - I was there one Easter and had fab weather but the 2 weeks before we got there it never stopped raining. There were families who had spent the entire trip in their apartment or in the pub!

Lagos is a nice resort. Train from Faro direct. Portugal can be cold in Feb/March.

I have been in Carvoeiro in Feb Sept and October and always had lovely weather. Very hot during the day. A little chillier at night but nothing a jumper didn't solve. Always wore shorts. Plenty of lovely beaches and plenty of hotels to choose from at good prices. There is also a lot of option for self catering apartments. Waterpark nearby but not sure if open in Feb as we visited in September. Kids aged 8 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well. Defo arrange transport as we made a mistake the first time getting a taxi with cost us 92

Tavira looks nice also. Considering going there myself in March. I would welcome any views/tips.

It is most likely to be cool in Feb and march Canary Islands is your best option for a bit of heat unless you go somewhere more exotic

Eastern Algarve is usually a few degrees warmer and drier than western algarve.
There can be a lot of rain, and heavy rain in Feb/March/April/May. But then accommodation in the Algarve is outrageously expensive in july and August now, so it is worth a shot in spring. You are rolling the dice on weather though. When its nice its really nice, but nothing like Algarve rain to ruin your hols. Go East of Faro to minimise the chance of bad weather that time of year.

As for the price of flights during any school holiday time. You can triple or quadruple them. So fly outside holiday time and you will get great bargains in the Algarve.
