I'm a programmer and am looking to start to get a handle on machine learning. I have 3rd level qualifications in computers and maths (few years ago now).

Does it make sense to take an online course, or dive in? Anybody have any tips on the best approach?

Dive in. Have a look at Apache Spark - plenty of online tutorials and it's the Flavour of the Month.

Loads of free MOOCs with people like edX and Coursera too.
