New Car delivery delay.

    Hi all,

Ordered a new car from a main dealer in July. Was given an expected time of delivery and a date for delivery to me.

The Day before I was expecting the vehicle I got a call saying car is delayed for another 3 weeks. Again it is estimated it will arrive in Ireland and then up to a week before it'll be delivered to me.

So I'm looking at a 162 reg in late October. Am I mad thinking I should wait until January or will it matter?

Do I have a leg to stand on regarding asking to wait until the new year for delivery?

Are you saying its the very same car, you just want to hold out registering so you get a 171 plate? I guess it probably translates into increased resale value if you plan on selling within the next 3 years or so, but if you intend to keep it for long I don't see the point.

Yes same car. Would the dealer usually have issues with this?

100 percent tell them hold it til January if there is no trade in to effect the deal. They pushed it back not you so I think it's fair enough now to not want a very late registered car.
Nothing nicer than having your new car built to your spec ready to drive away on Jan 1.

What was the original delivery date they said to you?

I'm in the same boat (car). It isn't Opel by any chance?

Nope not Opel. When did you order out of curiosity?

I ordered the last week in June. The paint i ordered was discontinued i was told after a few weeks of ordering the car. so i had to go with another choice. I presumed that would speed things up but that wasn't the case. They said it would be here this week but i'm not holding my breath. I think if you pay a deposit then there's not much chance of you getting them to hold off for you.

Original delivery date was week 2/3 of September.

If not delivered on date promised, I figure you would be entitled to calls the shots to some degree. If a car is 2 days late, does that give you right to get deposit back and tell dealer keep his car, no it doesn't. If it's weeks late, and it's into October, I think it perfectly reasonable to tell them not to register it til January. They might not be too happy as they may need sales numbers for October more than January but tough.

I was originally told 8-10 weeks and this is the 13th week i think so doubt i'll be able to do anything about it but the level of communication i received has not made me a happy camper.

To be honest if I was you, I would be (secretly) hoping that the delays continue. The closer you get to the end of the year and the longer the delay, the more bargaining power you have. Certainly if you don't have the car by mid-October I would be insisting that the garage put the car out of harm's way in their yard and that you will see them on 3 January. Otherwise I would looking for some money off the price to compensate for the delays.

I got an email off them today saying that it arrived this morning into Dublin Port. Hopefully they pay my road tax or something. Sorry to hijack your post OP.

    Just a quick update.

Car was due in Dublin yesterday.

Phone call this morning telling me it's still in Emden and they've no idea why.

It's gonna be next week at least then i'd reckon. The car has to go through revenue, etc when it gets here.

Unless you have a valuable trade-in as part of the deal at this stage of year I'd wait to collect it in Jan with a 171 plate rather than Oct with a 162 plate.

Hi OP, I wonder if your dealer is the same as mine. I ordered my car back in June and was told a delivery time of September. After loads of back and forth it turns out the car hasn't even gone into production and isn't due to go into production until the end of this month so they now reckon it will be early December before the car will be here. Naturally I've told them to keep it until Jan 17 but I've been hit with them lowering the trade in value on my car by 2k.

Feel your pain. I thought my delay was bad but that is unbelievable. I ordered in June also but due in Ireland this week.
You will get no satisfaction from them walk away now while you can and get a better deal somewhere else for Jan 17.

Grahamer666, no its Ford. ClareBear1, I'm thinking of looking up the North. At a quick glance it looks like I could save a few thousand once you take into account the vrt but I'm not sure if they'll do finance or what they'd give for mine.

You will not get finance from a NI dealer unless you are a NI resident. Also if they did take your southern reg car as a trade-in then they will give you the trade value of it which is the price they would sell it to a dealer down south. Another thing if your buying a brand new car in another state/country you will need to pay VAT as well as VRT on it when you bring it in here.

Very good hope you have better luck that way

If you buy in brand new in north you pay vat in the republic but get your vat back from U.K. So you'll probably still be ahead
