Passat 1.9 tdi overheating on motorway

    Hi all,

Looking for a bit of help, I have a 2003 6 speed 130bhp passat, it has been a super reliable car the last 2 years, over the last few months on a long journey on the motorway when cruising at 75+mph the engine temperature will gradually increase above the 90 degrees. I have never let it go into the red, a few minutes of full heat on the climate control bring it back down to 90 degrees. I have replaced the waterpump, thermostat with a non genuine unit, removed the rad and blasted it with powerwasher and flushed it out but still it happens.

Anyone any ideas? Have been reading stuff pointing towards head gasket but hopefully its not!!

    Cheers

    Darren

Is the car losing any coolant?

Meant to say no sign of coolant loss, same level in reservoir last 4/6 weeks

I had a similar problem in a Landcruiser one time, the solution was a new radiator.
Over time the cooling passages get blocked up with scale and rust and don't flow very well.
You can run a hose through it all you want but the water just flows through the path of least resistance.

    It could be the thermostat.
I se you already replaced it.

Just thought I'd come back and update the thread. Following on from the advice from CJ I got a new radiator and 5 litres of coolant and changed them today. Just back from a 90 minute run to Port Laois and back and happy to report problem has gone.
Thanks alot CJ , owe you a pint!!
    Cheers

im glad you got the car sorted but its never a good idea to power wash a radiator and people do it the whole time.
You can damage the fins of the radiator for one.
The other thing is normally radiators will block with dust and the likes.
Mix dust with water and you get mud which can end up stuck inside never to come out.
Blow it out with air is always the better option.
