Insurance Woes

Me and my wife are both insured and have full no claims bonus on the family car. Wife uses it more than me as she uses it for work.

Due to a change in job I need to get a car now. I know insurance has gone up an awful lot recently but I really was not expecting to be quoted approx €1500 for a bog standard 1.2/1.4 engine.

Insurers tell me that my no claims is only valid on the existing policy and can't be used on a new one.

Is there any way I can get that quote down. I am an experienced driver (25 years +) with no recent claims made or against me

I presume the policy is in her name?

If you have been named on her policy for the last 5 years and can prove that, and are claims free, most companies will allow you a 5 year introductory bonus based on the claims free driving experience.

My first point of call was to the AA who we have the current car with. They made no mention of this, but I will try another company and see how I get on

First thing you should do is contact the existing insurer and request a letter of named driving experience from them. At least when you are ringing other companies you can verify how many years you have and they can confirm that's acceptable.

When they say your no claims is only valid on the existing policy, they mean you cannot use your NCB on two cars at the same time.

The problem is your down as the main driver of your wife's car and now you want to be the main driver of your own car.

What you need to do is put your wife as the main driver of this new car and you as named and her experience from being named on your policy will carry over.

The reason i say to do that way is because its a real pain to try and change the main driver of the car mid term on the AA system. (They might tell you to cancel it and start it again)

But its all fully legal because once your married and your both named on each others policies you both have insurable interests in each car. So there wont be any fronting or the likes there.

Go with that and the AA will get you a more realistic quote. (Why the agent didn't see that may be because the AA have a very high turnover of staff, so a lot of new employees in and out the door might not have that experience for this )

Thanks so much for the reply, sounds very promising!

I called on Saturday and they were incredibly busy as their systems had been down the day before. May explain the oversight. I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks KS&L! went back to AA with your advice and the quote for the same car came in at €780.80 - still high but at least manageable - so I really appreciate your reply!! Shame I can only thank it once
