Kia Sorento issue

    Hi

1 have a 2006 Kia Sorento auto diesel with 180km on the clock and recently have noticed an issue that I don't understand and wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be causing it.

Most of my driving in on small back roads in west cork and rarely can I get above 60km on these on my daily 6km journey to work. However the odd time i manage to get onto a smooth road and get above 80km per hour I notice a "clitch" in the running of the car.

Trying to describe what it is is difficult but I feel a interruption in the engine/transmission when traveling at this speed on a smooth road. Its happens about every 3 seconds and almost like a build up of pressure and then release and only happens when I have accelerator pressed and stops once I release it so I don't feel this when car is free wheeling.

Wondering if its a problem with erg valve or can anyone shed light on what could cause it.

    Thanks

    John

The first thing I'd check is the fuel filter.

Thanks, that might explain it where the flow of fuel is restricted and engine is getting starved at higher revs, also might explain why car died recently whilst I was over taking someone.

Think the fuel filter on these is in the tank !

Does this have AUTO on the 4WD selector switch, If so try this...

With the engine running remove fuse F14 (tccs) This fuse also covers the immobiliser so it may not start if you remove it with key on engine off.

Now drive it and see are the symptoms still there.

Have you changed the tyres recently?

Last night I removed the fuel sending unit and opened the canister but apart from a few blobs of congealed gunk inside this housing the initial fuel filter was clean as was the tank. I cleaned out the gunk and reinstalled it. After complete reassembly and reconnecting the battery the fuel indicator was reading empty with a fuel light on the dash, so I must have somehow knocked out the float and had not the time last night to redo the job so its my task to correct this this evening.

I reckon after this I will replace the main fuel filter and the go from there.

Dieselbug not sure what the tccs fuse does as though that was for petrol ignition engines can you explain function of your suggestion please.

No tyres are not recent, but did also have the engine die on me when overtaking recently which also kind fits with fuel starvation.

Have a look here for what dieselbug is referring to: http://www.sorentonation.com/forum/showthread.php?2666-Will-Removing-the-TCCS-Fuse-(Turn-off-4wd)-Cause-Damage

What's actually happening here though? Clutch coming in and out based on a dodgy sensor reading?

tccs is the Sorento's torque on demand system a sort of automatic 4wd which only engages "on demand"

It can give problems and the shunt type symptoms you describe sounds a bit like that.

But it looks as though you may well have fuel problems so take care of that and then see what way things go.

I reckon I have this issue with the 4wd coming on and faulty sensor. The issue is very intermittent and at times difficult to detect depending on the road surface I travel as most of the time im on country back roads.

Also its seems to happen mostly when car is loaded or after traveling for a while and engine/transmission is hot. Lately its got worse with shorter times between shunting and feeling almost continuous and gone when I remove the TCCS fuse. but I cant drive like that so how do I resolve it permanently ?

Do I need to replace the sensor and where is it ?
