Sad news tonight that Arnold Palmer has passed away. He had been looking very frail on the last few public appearances. May he rest in peace.

Just read the news on BBC. Sad but he had a good innings and a great life. RIP to a legend of the game.

RIP - one of the great golfers and a thorough gentleman - if winning in golf is about 'winning like a gentleman' he was certainly a winner.

Was lucky enough to meet him when he spoke at a dinner in a hotel I was working in. It was part of the events held to celebrate the opening of the Palmer Course at the K-Club and I was the one given the job of chaperoning/looking after him through the event, not that he needed much looking after!

At the end of the evening he gave me a heartfelt thanks and a warm handshake - having done the job for other 'personalities' - the more usual conclusion to the event was them disappearing into a car at the end of the evening without a word of gratitude.

To be fair to Rory, he had a very nice few words about Palmer on hearing the news. I would say that most of today's golf pros realise what a great job he did in creating their career opportunities. Great man.

I think he only gave up his pilot's licence at the age of 80, he had a very long and fulfilling life.

    RIP.

Something about Arnie epitomised the pinnacle of professional golf even more than Nicklaus with his unparalelled major record. His name was synonymous with golf really.

I always looked forward to seeing him appear at The Masters par 3 competition.

    May he rest in peace.

I remember watching this interview last year and thinking how he was saying farewell to the place. The crowds knew it too and were giving him the reception he deserved.

I think he was perfect for that time in the game - first on tv and a real character.

I never warmed to him myself.

But nice to see that you can play the game in your own way and be an amazing golfer.

Another big character of sport / music and culture lost in 2016.
