Disney pulls Halloween costume after accusations of 'brown face'

DISNEY HAS WITHDRAWN a children’s Halloween costume depicting the tattooed Pacific demi-god Maui after critics accused the entertainment giant of promoting “brown face”.

The full-body, zip-up costume, linked to the upcoming animated feature Moana, featured brown skin with traditional Pacific tattoos, a grass skirt and bone necklace.

Pacific activists accused Disney of cultural appropriation, comparing it to the racially offensive “black face” make-up once worn by white performers in US minstrel shows.

    This is getting silly.

So should they have made the skin tone a different colour? I'm pretty sure if they made a Disney show about this and all the characters were white/blonde/blue eyes... there'd be an uproar. When Disney withdraws the item some will probably cry about their lack of diversity.

More internet outrage. I really can't see how anyone could find this insuring. Although I don't know any Polynesians so I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who was how they feel about it.

I'm willing to bet most people who objected where either white or part of black lives matter. Or both.

Wonder how many pacific islanders found this offensive. I'm guessing....zero.

Acc to the article the strongest objection came from the NZ Maori Party.

So looks like you'd lose that bet. Unless there is some cross over between them and BLM.

Again, the article suggests you are incorrect and identifies the NZ Maori Party, which obviously represents one group of Pacific Islanders, as the main objectors.

I was about to say that. The first article says that the costume is inaccurate and is depicting one of their gods in a cheap/tacky manner.

People object to their culture and religion being commerically exploited by Disney. How does this equate to keyboard activism exactly?
