A6 - stuck rear caliper

    Hey all,

Naturally this would happen on a Sunday when I'm away from home :(

Came back to the car, started it up and pressed the parking brake button. Cue beeping and flashing parking brake light and warnings about parking brake malfunction.

Have tried turning it on, off pressing the button repeatedly.. No joy. Tried driving slowly while pressing the button, no joy except I get a rather annoying warning tone in 2nd and a grinding from what seems like the left rear

Had this happen before with my previous Passat and it required a new caliper but at least I was able to get it released in the meantime by the above steps.

It's not looking so lucky this time. If I call breakdown recovery can they release it on the spot or will it need to be brought straight to a garage?.

    Any advice or suggestions appreciated

    Cheers

Got it unstuck at last.. Put it up on a slight incline facing downwards and it unlocked.

Button is now covered by masking tape (useful trick from the last time) so I don't instinctively press it until I get it sorted

Bit ridiculous though that you can potentially be stranded like that. Surely there should be some way to force it to mechanically release in the event of an error/failure

Electronic parking brakes have a hidden manual release. No idea where in audi but I know Renault have them in the boot just front of the spare wheel.

Electronic parking brakes have a hidden manual release. No idea where in audi but I know Renault have them in the boot just front of the spare wheel.

Some electric handbrakes are operated by remote motors and as such it may be possible to install a manual release between motor and caliper.
I don't believe VW / Audi have this release as the motor is incorporated into the rear calipers and if the motor stops in the closed position, there is no easy release.

Well I'm getting yellow warnings about a parking brake malfunction since earlier today but it's a good thing I've covered the switch as I've instinctively tried to use it a few times.

Aside from never being entirely happy with just leaving it in P(ark), there's no ill effects since. Experience with my previous Passat tells me that I can probably manage in the meantime as from what I remember, these calipers aren't cheap :(
