Citroen C4 timing belt issue

    Hi I recently bought a 2004 1.4 sx hatchback Citroen C4. It's petrol.

The evening before I bought it a brand new timing belt kit was fitted to the car. Forward a week later when I take off the timing belt cover on the engine I see the belt is not running centred on the camshaft sprocket.

I pushed it over as far as I could with my fingers. I checked it a few days later again and it's still overhanging the camshaft sprocket.

I rang the guy that did the timing belt change before I bought the car and he assured me the car is safe to drive. I bought it back to him on Thursday night and he said he put a new water pump in with a wider sprocket and also put a washed behind the tensioner as well to prevent it rubbing on the timing belt as it's slightly fraying.

He also reckons the two camshaft sprockets aren't in line that one of them
Is slightly in further than the other by about 1mm.

He has told me that there is absolutely nothing more he can do with it and said it won't break or come off either and that the issue must be there from when the car was new. All he could tell me to do is change it again in 18months time.

So I'm here to ask for yer advice and see is there anything I can do to solve this issue? Thanks in advance for yer help :-)

The belt wont run in the centre of the pulley it will run to the outer edge but should not be running off the pulley.
If it is running off the pulley get it looked at by a competent mechanic.

It only runs off one pully by a few mm, when I push it back it just returns to the same position again :-(

What gave rise to your suspicions to remove the timing belt cover to have a look? Was there a noise coming from that area?

No noise. Was with my friend a few days after buying the car and he was looking at it and said show me the timing belt. That's when I discovered the problem

How much work is involved in removing the cover?

Bring it to a good reputable indy that knows his way around a french car and have it looked at. :)
