Dog Bite

My son was badly bitten last night by a dog who was in a public park with his owner but not on a lead. The owner gave my son his phone number and son continued on his way.He couldnt see the bite in the dark but his skin was punctured with teeth marks and his skin is torn.
I rang the Gardai who called to take details. They said they would be contacting the dog warden about this.Does anyone know what the procedure is now,is the dog automatically put down or are they allowed one bite.I am raging over this.

I also intend to send the owner the full cost of the A and E visit and the tetanus injection and whatever other costs are incurred. My son rang St Vincents last night and they advised not to go in as he would be waiting for hours, the nurse said you have seventy two hours to get the tetanus injection.I spent five hours in St Michaels in Dunlaoghaire last week with my daughter who had been hit by a ball in school so I can only imagine what Friday nights are like.

If the owner refuses to pay these costs is it possible to put in a claim on their house insurance.

Legal advice can not be sought here. I suggest contacting FLAC (flac.ie) for some advice.

Some pontification though: I think it's a bit over the top to be 'raging'. The owner seems responsible enough (information volunteered) and accidents happen. We've absolutely no idea what, if anything, your son was doing, perhaps the dog perceived a threat of some kind. Nevertheless the dog was out of the owner's control and you should not be out of pocket, so see first point.

Your son was not badly bitten. Badly bitten is, your leg is hanging off and your on a life support machine. The bite wasn't even visible in the dark and you were advised not to attend the emergency room.
Suggest that you attend caredoc / d doc today and send the owner of the dog the bill and be done with it.
