While I appreciate there is an existing thread for the NT breakfast show I think PW deserves his own thread, while he is only 1/6 of the NT breakfast cast he is the standout letdown of the show.

When I heard he was coming to NT I made the decision to switch to morning Ireland but find myself risking NT some mornings in case he is not on (he is not on everyday) but have caught him rambling a few mornings.

I can't see him lasting long. His attitude stinks, very arrogant. He loves the sound of own voice and seeks to hijack interviews by talking about himself in a God like aura. One example was when he had a crime correspondent on and he took over the interview and it was all about him, gave the poor guest about 20% of the airtime.

Another example of his arrogance was the shambles of the Irish language interview, all about the great PW and shouting over his guest making sensationalist statements akin to the thrash he wrote in tabloids, he obviously annoyed a lot of people that day and I'm sure the producer gave him an earful yet the next day he continued to stoke the flames by getting digs in.

He has been too long writing tabloid thrash articles to be able to host a radio show, let alone a morning drive time current affairs one.

What does everyone else think? Twitter seems to have a very negative reaction to him.

He will have the opposite affect on newstalk with a lot of listeners 'turning the dial' away from NT

    A nasty tabloid hack.

Poor Pat Kenny must wonder what kind of menagerie of gutter broadcasting he's walked himself into.

It is an insult to the professional reputation of Pat Kenny that he must take the baton from the insufferable Williams at 9am, and pass it on to that other great gasbag, that gundyguts, Hook, at midday.

I know Ivan Yeats' departure from NT was something of a catastrophe. But it was only one catastrophe, which NT bosses have managed to double or treble. They are making a hames of the whole thing.

Maybe there is a place for a Paul Williams 'Scumbag Hour', on a Saturday evening, sandwiched between Dill the Victim and Shona does Lebanon. But honestly, heads should roll for Williams' appointment.

PW is a one man fan club. I was on a train to Cork a few years ago, I was travelling in the first class carriage thanks to the fact that it was a business trip. Our man PW was in the same carriage and when the conductor/ticket inspector arrived to check our tickets, it turned out that PW only had a standard class ticket. Cue the standard 'don't you know who I am?' spiel. The spin was that as he was a target for gangsters seeking to silence him, he needed to travel incognito in the first class carriage where prospective hitmen were less likely to notice him! A total pr1ck with a bloated sense of his own importance.

He's absolutely appalling as a radio presenter.

The Self centred, self importance attitude is an absolute turnoff.

He has a gripe with garda commissioner because his moles have been silenced and takes this personal issue out on the airwaves.

    Impossible to listen to.

Couldn't agree more. I enjoyed the previous incarnations if the show and have continued to listen out if habit. I'm switching off in Monday morning though

I wouldn't argue against anything above but I think the fact that he has a slightly different set of garda leaks to Paul Reynolds, who is a disgrace, is useful.

I think he is not alone on the morning programme as being truly awful... I have to put it to you, the rest are equally as bad. I have it a few weeks but have switched off completely. I never really like Chris Donoghue but Yeats kept him on his toes and I enjoyed the banter.. The whole show is boring now -

Ugh. I fear every time I see this thread I am going to get excited and think there will be a press release saying he has quit.

    One can dream :(

I feel exactly the same. I only listen to Morning Ireland now, and like a previous poster, I check these threads to see news of resignations, or signs of the show (inevitably) being scrapped.

I can't imagine who is still listening to this rubbish.

Paul Williams has built a career off the back of tip offs and chinese whispers from gardai who, by doing so are compromising their own investigations and feeding into the perception that gardai in this country speak out of both sides of their mouth. If the gardai didnt feed Williams with sensitive information about active cases he'd have very little to write and we wouldnt see the 10 page pull outs in the tabloids glorifying bloodshed for the sake of selling papers.

He's clearly become incredibly bitter through years of feeding off this societal underbelly and possibly due to looking over his shoulder for fear of becoming the next journo target. His anger and resentment is palpable and dominates his persona as a broadcaster, which by extension makes him unlistenable.

It's funny I see this thread this morning as wife only said this morning how awful Paul Williams is and its usually busy mornings in the house with kids etc. and we're only half listening to the radio so if the awfulness of PW can catch her ear.....and as they say women are always right!

Anytime I hear him I just think gutter thrash.

I stopped listening to NT Breakfast as soon as I heard he was on the roster. I now wait till 9.00 to switch on NT.

He is an appalling gutter journalist.

Every time I hear him refer to a euro as a yoyo I want to smash my car radio.

Also, his biased treatment of AGS is a sight to behold.

Oh thread, where have you been all my life? (Well since PW came to NT anyway!)

They've tried this whole "Move the Dial" marketing campaign when Pat Kenny arrived and that's exactly what I've done now...to RTE R1.

I just can't stand listening to the man, which is a shame because I really like Shane Coleman. Hopefully they'll cut PW from the team and let Shane and Collette run the show themselves.

His smarmy voice perfectly suits the ****e he talks about. But not his fault he got the job, who the fack hired him? As soon as I heard he was coming to the show I died a little inside. Yates is an awful loss.

    Agree with all the comments!

What annoys me is he still gets peoples name wrong and advertises the paper he works for all the time, what a great article witten in it today etc.

Williams seems to have very little self-awareness and no capacity for self-filtering, so any ould shyte that comes into his head is immediately relayed to the lucky listeners of Newstalk Breakfast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,789 ✭✭✭slavetothegrind

He is impossible to listen to. I am a fan of newstalk at it's best but they are making some serious errors in staffing.

Agree with above poster, it's a good solid show without him but sadly until he is gone it's RTE 1 for me until 9.

    Pat kenny is usually good

Then music for lunchtime, Hook is almost as annoying and getting worse, before Moncrief who i would give an 8 hour slot to if i could...

Is he gone or just on holidays? Think this isn't third week I haven't heard his annoying pontificating voice in the morning

I worked in the Sunday World when it was in Terenure in the early 00's. He was one of the most hated people in the building ,an absolute little prick ..small man syndrome would probably some him up .His "sources " where basically junkies and the less fortunate of society who would roll up to the building on a Wednesday to feed him bits of info and rumors which where then passed off as gospel in the paper of a Sunday. They got enough for a fix from it.Cant for the life of me understand how he gets any air time what so ever with the repetitive ****e he comes out with .
