Having lived with this basically my entire life I have gotten to a stage where it doesn't stop me from doing things I want to do anymore, that is to say I appear pretty much normal, but I still experience a constant feeling of anxiety at every possible moment.

Anyone else here suffer from PTSD? How does it affect you?

    Is that self diagnosed PTSD?

    No, by a medical team.

    sorry to hear that OP.

Suffered that over a smaller period of time along with short term memory loss due to a traumatic head injury. It absolutely terrified me that I literally had no control over my emotive state and the slightest thing sent me over the edge. A simple table fan sent me into a massive panic attack due to conflicting messages my mind was trying to process.

Thankfully it only lasted 3months thereabouts, other injuries took longer to heal. Found it very difficult to discuss how I felt until nearly a year later I had a public breakdown. Physcological effects of the head injury or residual PTSD. Thankfully all gone now minus tinnitus 7yrs later.

How do you cope daily if you mind me asking?

Without using Google, what is it?

    Edit, I've googled it.

    Ouch.

    No, by a medical team.

Then do exactly what they tell you, and don't search for answers here.

PTSD is a serious condition that can slide into depression if undiagnosed or untreated.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

I killed a fly once. PTSD has been horrific ever since

AH might not be the most suited to have a serious discussion on the effects of PTSD. People I know who have experienced horrific events in their life have suffered with it. It can manifest itself very differently in each person and depends on the trauma. Like every traumatic event or series of events it doesn't just affect the victim but those close to them as well. It can destroy lives and relationships if not treated adequately or left untreated.

Brother abroad was diagnosed with it after a head injury on a construction site. Very difficult seeing his personality change.. but he's doing better.

There's a Long Term Illness forum on Boards.

Thread might be better suited there tbh as people on After Hours are usually drunk and that's just during the day.

I experienced prolonged PTSD. It is an ordeal beyond explanation to those who have never experienced it. I am not into meds (that's just me, no harm to anyone else) so I researched like crazy. There are a huge number of facets to this issue. The obvious ones like good diet (get rid of stimulants and sugar), lots of exercise (walk off that adrenaline) and cognitive management (be aware of the insidious thoughts you leave carelessly lying around in your subconscious). Less obvious are what i think of as the structural issues. Due to an enormously traumatic event or series of stresses the amygdala in the brain has been switched into a permanently ''ON'' position, stimulating constant fight or flight. Think of this as a chemically induced neural groove in the pathways of your brain. The way to switch this amygdala response to ''OFF'' is to create alternative neural grooves. This involves losing the fear of fear, so the old neural groove is not reinforced. There are several adjunct therapies that can be of help here - although essentially it involves you walking into and through the wall of fear, and ultimately losing fear of death. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can help - if you get the right therapist, someone with charisma. Neuro Linguistic reprogramming, such as the Rewind Technique, is another good possibility. Check out Human Givens - a book by Joe Griffen and Ivan Tyrell.

    Good luck.
Even the most prolonged and extreme form of this can be overcome. I am proof. :)

Was that definitely PTSD? It can sometimes be confused with Post Traumatic Brain Injury. There are lots of interesting accounts of veterans especially Navy Seals where it was presumed they were suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but had Traumatic Brain Injury where the symptoms might look similar but require a different treatment approach.

    ^^^ This.

I've suffered due to combat experiences back as far as 1988.

I'd consider posting about it in the long term illness forum if someone really needed to connect with suffers, I might even use a different username there if I did.

There's not a snowballs chance in hell I'd post about it here in AH, you're only giving the usual AH idiots an excuse to poke ignorance at a very sensitive & serious condition for the sufferer. As can be seen from posts above this one some of them have arrived early.

RE: this thread being in AH, I think when people have an issue (PTSD, depression, whatever), they sometimes have an urge to actually want to shout about it out loud and see what happens.

Posting in AH, you are getting a fairly honest, gut responses from people, with little qualms by posters in terms of sensitivity on their part (i'm guilty of it too). So they're honest for the most part, even if they are taking the piss.

Commiserations to the OP and people who have been through a traumatic, life changing event. Ive had a few myself.

My advice is to do your best to stay strong for your family, try and stay as active as possible (less TV, more fields), and try and relax about yourself - reassure yourself (your good qualities).

Even in the Long Term Illness forum people can sometimes try to provoke you into an academic debate and don't know when to stop or exercise proper judgement where people are looking for support rather than to be challenged. You could disclose something very personal to you but there's nothing stopping anybody from wandering in and telling you that you're wrong in how you feel or what you just related.

It's due to the nature of Boards because there are so many different types of forums which lend themselves to so many different communication styles so they can get carried over into different forums. You need to protect yourself from those type of posters. For that reason I don't use Boards now for any form of personal support and use other websites/online discussion groups where there's no danger of somebody challenging you when you're looking for a more supportive experience.

The report is a year old and it's posted on at least four other zombie threads. What's the point?

You're in the wrong thread, pal, unless you think PTSD stands for Post Talking ****e Disorder.

Hello there, usual AH idiot here.

Maybe the OP and others should get professional help and not subject themselves to sexy people like me, who may possible joke, owing to fact that this is AH and not ones own personal therapists office.
