They have been unbelievably rare in Ireland and even in the UK really since the road tax changes in 2008. I think it will turn around in next few years though. I've a 328i and I'm half considering selling to buy a 4GC but not even sure what to advertise it for as there is no reference point on any of the Irish car sales websites.

Are BMW's immune from the low use DPF issues that plague other manufacturers? I don't recall ever seeing a thread on here regarding DPF issues on a BMW.

I saw a 161 535i a few weeks back, on CD plates though.

can I pry as to why it must be a petrol ? you are limiting yourself to a lexus I think.

I have 5 series petrol myself so not knocking your choice of car I applaud it but why would you buy such a car if you are only a town driver? Only becomes better than your average car on an open road.

Would a 3 Series Plug in Hybrid do you?

M Sport here less the 5k government grant:

5 series petrol made sense for the once a month spin down the country. I find our current 5 series tight for space so 3series is out size-wise. ideal is 5 series estate but impossible to source here except span new (looking like most reasonable option right now)

I'd say you would be doing well convincing a dealer to order one for you unless they might be able to source one from a UK BMW dealer that's already in stock. BTW the F1x are being replaced at the end of year with the new G3x model.

yep they have stock in UK, price difference between 162 plate f11 and 171 G31 is 11k though (44 vs 55)

Something like this would be nice :)

Sterling is currently very low, could you convince an Irish dealer to take one of these in for you? What would they charge for the convenience?

lovely car no doubt but 535i is overkill for me. i have more or less resigned myself to the fact that i will be ordering a 528i from UK. that engine will be identical in g31 so i cant justify the extra 11k

That's not true, the G30 will be using the recently introduced B48 engine, not the N20 used by the F10. It's going to be a 530i, and the early reviews are not very positive, the 530d and 540i have gotten much better reviews (although BMW put the lowest spec suspension option into the 530i sDrive and fancier suspension options into the six cylinder models).

That said, if you're getting a petrol 5 series, you might as well get one with a six cylinder engine, or else the 530e which should follow very quickly after the G30 is launched as BMW has been taken by surprise at the level of interest in their plug-in range across Europe. I think in the Irish context the very limited number of people who want a petrol 5 series will want one with the six cylinder engine (I know that I for certain wouldn't have any interest in a four cylinder petrol 5 series, if I wanted economy I'd be having the 520d, if I wanted performance and/or better refinement, I'd be after one with six cylinders).

I should also point out as a UK resident that petrol 5 series are as rare as hen's teeth from the F10 onwards, in fact there's very few petrol 5 series after the 520d came out all the way back in 2005, the overwhelming majority of 5 series sold in the UK are company cars, and they have been taxed on CO2 for almost 15 years now, so it's diesel all the way over here, too. Surprisingly given the British preference for more powerful engines, the vast majority of UK F10s are also 520ds just like in Ireland. I should also point out that the 520i is more expensive to buy than the 520d in the UK (by about €1,000) despite having less power and inferior fuel economy.

While I appreciate the your thoughts, the only petrol 6cyclinder for sale today is the 535i and it starts at 76k. I do 4 thousand miles a year. That does not seem like the correct choice. I'm just back from the zero petrols joe duffy event and was told that plugin 5 series would be available for delivery 'after summer' next year but they won't commit to a month until production starts. you wouldn't want to be holding your breath,

Wait till the G30 is launched then, the 530e would be ideal for you. I definitely wouldn't go for a 528i or a 530i with only a four cylinder engine, nobody will want one second-hand, the very few people who want a petrol 5 series will want the six cylinder model; everyone else will want a diesel.

If the 3 series is anything to go by, the 530e will probably be cheaper to buy than a 520d for good measure (because of the various grants there are for plug-in hybrids coupled with the very low levels of VRT thanks to the exceptional on-paper fuel consumption and CO2 emissions). With the 3 series the 330e starts from €47,680 but then there are the various grants, which bring it down to €40,180 (IIRC), which is in fact cheaper than a 316d equipped with an automatic gearbox (that's €41,594) and it's about €5,000 cheaper than a 320d automatic.

Won't the 530e be a 4 cylinder petrol though also? I know it's could still be cheaper if they follow the same pricing structure as the 330e. I've read that there will be a 540e and 550e also, I'm sure one of them would have a 6 cylinder petrol though!! I'm just hoping that they bring out more than just the 430e as well.

Went looking for a second hand petrol BMW a few months ago. Rarer than hens teeth. Diesel is a little bit of overkill for us, but the only other option was to order a new brand new petrol.

The 740e is a 4 cal so I can't see the 530e or 540e being anything other than 4 cyl.
