    Hi,
My parents are getting divorced after a few years of separation. My mother originally wrote a letter to my dad saying she just wanted legal fees covered and didn't want to claim any of the property (dad has a farm and lives in family home) and was looking for legal fees. My mother had an affair so this seems fair in my opinion. Her lawyer is now stating that there has to be a settlement as the judge won't allow it otherwise, and my dad's lawyer has recommended getting the house valued. Surely if two people want to call it a day then that can be done without exchanging money?

Originally she had a welsh solicitor but my dads solicitor had reservations that as it's an Irish marriage and both parties are Irish this may not be a full legal divorce. Since she has changed lawyers, the request for a settlement has come through.

Just wondering if this makes sense, that there has to be a settlement.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm afraid you need to seek legal advice, we can't give you that here.
