Gas Boiler issue (Potterton HE)

    Hi All,

As of this morning, my boiler refuses to ignite. It's a potterton HE as per the link below:

    www.potterton.co.uk/downloads/Potterton_Performa_System_HE_Install.pdf

The fan/50° neon is flashing and the boiler do not ignite, so I've no hot water nor heating... I can hear the fan turning as usual. I tried to reset it several times to no avail.
According to the above link, it seems to be flue related issue.

Anyone could tell me what could be wrong and, more importantly, how much would it be to get fixed? Also could you recommend someone for the job (in Santry area, Dublin)?

    Thanks for your help.

If you think its flue related the only thing I can suggest you do is to check the flue from the outside to make sure its not blocked or obstructed.

I presume it has an electronic ignition. If the fan is turning can you also hear the electrode trying to ignite the pilot gas ?.

Thanks for your reply, I've checked nothing was obstructing the flue, which doesn't seem to be the case.
It doesn't do the clicking sound it usually does to ignite, no.

    What do you think?

I'm not an RGI, but I have been used to diagnosing problems with my own system. So it could either be something that is preventing the air pressure being achieved (which I presume is necessary before the electrode tries to ignite the gas, something like a blocked flue, faulty fan or faulty air pressure switch), or it could be the electrode failing to ignite the gas. All you can really do it consult with the manual and see what it suggests. Think you just need to get a RGI involved. Sorry, but I am not in Dublin so can't suggest anyone.

I'll call around then. Thanks again for your input, appreciate it.

Just to let you know the outcome.

Turned out to be the PCB of the boiler not sending power to the fan, the noise I heard mistaking it for the fan was actually the pump.

Cost was 250€ including fitting for a brand new one.
