The Santa Fe is alot bigger and more expensive than the likes of the Rav4 these days, the Santa Fe is a 7 seater and similar to the Kia Sorento. Tucson would probably be more in competition with the Rav4.

Tucson and Qashqai would probably be the biggest sellers in that market here, Kia Sportage which is basically a repackaged Tucson, Ford Kuga, Mazda CX-5, VW Tiguan and Honda CR-V would also be in the mix. Renault have the recently launched Kadjar which is a repackaged Nissan Qashqai while Seat are launching the Alteca which is a cheaper Tiguan. If you need something with a bit more practicality then you have then Nissan X-Trail which is really a slightly bigger Qashqai and Skoda are launching the 7 seater Kodiak early next year which again is Skoda's version of the Tiguan/Alteca.

The best SUV is probably something like a range rover. So you should probably state your budget.

Both very economical options? In fairness op economical and suv don't belong in the one sentence.

Sorry to correct you but there is no "L" in ATECA :D

    And again, Slight correction
The upcoming Kodiaq is not Skodas version of the Tiguan / Ateca.

The upcoming Yeti will be their take on them

Thanks for all the advice.. not interested in off road.. I'm a very tall bloke so plenty of leg room and living in the sticks so a comfy ride would appeal.. Nissan x trail looks decent

Correct and VW are launching a 7 seater Tiguan next year too which the 7 seater Kodiaq uses as its base and will compete with to a certain extent. Also from what I have read Skoda will introduce a cheaper 5 seater Kodiaq next year too but there are uncertainties if this will just be called Yeti in Europe or whether a new Yeti will specifically be designed for Europe

I bought a Ford Kuga and love it. Bit heavier on diesel than I would have liked though. About 42mpg.

Looks wise, the new tiguan is nice. Looks a lot bigger then the old one. Not ten a penny like the Korean suvs.

Don't know how it drives but if you're buying an SUV you're probably not too bothered about driving dynamics

    True
    The Tiguan ( XL )
    is in the pipeline

The Kodiaq will not compete with the Tiguan

Apparently the Kodiaq is coming as a 5 seater with 7 seat option. ( similar to the Xtrail, same size but 7 seat option )

The Yeti 2 will be in direct competition with the Tiguan / Ateca.

Looks great there, but didn't like the look of it in person, especially on the standard small Irish wheels. Expensive enough for what you're getting.

A lot worse looking than the old model in person. very disappointing from VW and way overpriced for anything but the even uglier paddy spec

I wouldn'y go that far now in fairness.
I think the old one was a box on wheels, This one has a better styling about it.

I would, vw have lost the run of themselves in the last few years. They are not the cars they once were.

The old model came out 10 years ago to be fair, it was in the times of mk5 e new one is a step forwards, but not a leap by any means.
There's an old model facelift one in my family, and to be fair, it's not miles off the new one.

If the OP is still looking for a reliable, economical SUV that is decent all round then the Honda CR-V would probably be his best bet. I like what Toyota have done with the facelift of the RAV4 but I know one person who upgraded from the pre facelift and he preferred having the Toyota engine in it. The CRV is probably the better car still with the superior engine line up.

I'm not aware of any issues with Honda's 1.6 diesel and it has been out a few years now.

If doing small urban mileage then the Lexus NX might be an outside the box option but they would not be everyone's cup of tea.

I've driven a hired X-Trail, the 1.6L diesel engine. They're really spacious and have the two extra seats in the back which fold down to give you extra boot space. It was quite economical too from what I remember but wouldn't have the performance for me. For your requirements I think it might suit. It looks good too and I saw quite a few people checking it out when I was driving it and when it was parked.
