    Hi
I have just purchased the new Now TV Smart box, it said that I would need a digital aerial to be able to receive the Freeview channels, I have a Now TV account and currently use the old Roku box everything works fine, but I'm upgrading to get the Freeview channels. Any ideas on what aerial to get or can I use a satellite dish connection.

    Thanks
    Evelyn

Freeview is the UK terrestrial TV service, & only limited areas of ROI can get reliable reception: what part of the country are you in?

It should work with Saorview too, our own free terrestrial service, but that's only RTE, TV3, TG4, & UTV Ireland.

There are no such things as 'digital aerials' BTW.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply I'm in Kinsale, Co. Cork. It did say in the small print in order to get the Freeview channels I would need a digital aerial, whatever that is. I just use my broadband for all TV viewing I have no aerial of any sorts or satellite, just wondering what I would need.

    Thanks again.

Well, you won't be getting Freeview in Kinsale, but most of the same channels are available free-to-air on satellite, although this box doesn't have a satellite tuner.

Maybe you have something else that does, your TV might even have a satellite tuner built in. Then it would be a matter of getting a dish, & an aerial for Saorview, if you want the Irish channels too.

Moved to Satellite, on the basis that this is a Sky TV product, though it could just as easily fit in Cable or even Terrestrial given the nature of the query. As this thread is about now TV I'll give the obligatory warning about the rule about not circumventing regional restrictions applying.

OP you need to remember when discussing the "small print" on this box is that this product is intended for sale and use in the United Kingdom only; it is assumed that the user will be within reach of a UK terrestrial TV transmitter. Which you are not in Cork. It might work for Saorview too but that wasn't the intention of the manufacturer.

This from another forum which sums up the use of the word "digital" aerial nicely

What I said is there is no such thing as a Digital Aerial, ...

An aerial doesn't care what it is receiving, the same device will quite happily receive analogue TV, digital TV, analogue radio, digital radio, morse code or little green men from Mars. The only thing it cares about is the frequency of the signal, not what the signal is.

Preceding the word aerial with "Digital" is often used by less than scrupulous TV aerial installers to imply to the gullible that you somehow need a special aerial to receive digital telly. You don't. You just need a UHF band aerial that covers the frequencies used by the transmitter you are receiving from.

Therefore be wary of anyone promoting "digital aerials" as they could be trying to rip you off by charging more then the identical "non digital aerial".

You need an aerial - you might get away with an indoor one if you're near a transmitter, otherwise you'll need one in the attic or on the roof.

I get a perfect signal with this cheapo job:

but depending on your geography you may need something larger.

This will only allow you to receive RTE, TV3, TG4 and UTV Ireland.

The UK stations (BBC etc) cannot be received with this box, neither with a dish nor an aerial. (not in Cork, anyway)
