Dogs eyelid swollen

So just back from a walk & I noticed the dogs left eyelid swollen up, so his eye looks closed. The eye itself isn't red but he is pawing at the eyelid like it's itchy.
I assume he must've got something in it while we were out, or maybe it's a bite/ sting.
Is there anything I can give him at home?
Does he need a vet visit or will it just go down itself?
    He doesn't appear bothered otherwise

there could be dirt / grit stuck under the eye lid and its irritating him, have you tried to wash his eye out with luke warm water?

I'll give that a go, if he lets me!

Just be very gentle and try and rinse it out, don't pull / rub at the eye etc, room temp / luke warm water. Like an eye bath etc.

It will probably flow all over the place , but try and do it a few times and then give him a half an hour or so if it's still annoying him it's the vet I'm afraid as something could damage / hurt his eye.

He may have been bitten by something. If the washing out doesn't ease things, I'd give the vet a ring, just to see if he/she thinks a visit is necessary.

Gave him a bit of a rinse out, vet said to wait and see, so he's much better today.
Doesnt look like he went 10 rounds with Tyson anymore!
