That's right folks. Your locally elected councillors from Fianna Fail backed by Fine Gael have decided to increase the LPT in Limerick by 10% next year.

Sinn F in leader in the council, Cllr Seamus Browne proposed a reduction of 15% in the 2017 property tax. But Cllr Michael Collins rejected the Sinn Fein proposal saying it would lead to a cut in the services provided by the council. Instead, he amended it and proposed that the local property tax be increased by 10%. Fine Gael leader in the council, Cllr John Sheahan seconded the amendment.

I vividly remember before the last election having a discussion with a Fianna Fail councillor who advised that they planned to cut LPT by 15% over the next five years, which would equate to a 3% discount per year. Instead they have gone and increased it. (No surprise there)

You might remember this and challenge same when they come knocking for votes at the next local election.

In this country you get what you deserve. How some people keep voting in these idiots i will never know.

I am one of those "odd" people that support the idea of a property tax... with one simple rule, all money raised locally should be kept local..

I agree, and then the local people can influence how it's spent

how do you know that? The amount being taken int he LPT in each area hardly makes a dent in the local authority's budget does it?

20% goes to a central fund...

And other amounts go straight to Irish water

Curious about this - do you have any source for that info?

I'm not against it either but one of the selling points at the time of it's introduction was tax harmonisation and that the money would be spent locally.

Foolishly, I took the harmonisation piece to mean my PAYE would reduce as more people would be paying tax. That really hasn't happened.

The 20% is in legislation

As for Irish Water

http://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0205/678056-pac-water/

Along with your motor tax as well

Interesting one indeed - although that Irish Water amount comes from the 20% to central fund no?

Some stats here:
http://www.revenue.ie/en/about/statistics/local-property-tax-2013-2015.html

so, still 80% stays int he local area...

I do not answer the door to politicians as a rule and certainly would not take any notice of Sinn Fein telling the public what they want to hear.

In my area there seems to be less local services since the introduction of the property tax .
