While Im amongst the first to cynically mock these sort of things, the ice bucket challenge funded a major breakthrough in ALS research.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

It would have fully cured every ailment known to medical science if every tool with a bucket on their head actually sent in money rather than just nominating other tools to 'raise awareness'.

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's none left
'Cause I've been brassing and laughing so long that
Even my mamma thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you talking, and where you walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but I gotta lope
As they croak I see myself in the pistal smoke fool
I'm the kinda G that little homies want to be like
On my knees in the night, saying prayers in the street light

They been spending most their lives living in the gangsta's paradise

Look at the situation they got me facin'
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the streets
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an educated fool with money on my mind
Got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'd out gangsta set trippin' banger
And my homies is down so don't arouse my anger, fool
Death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away,
I'm living life, do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24
The way things are going I don't know

I spent a lot of money on hair extensions (well into the mid hundreds) in July 2014. A few weeks later, I did the ice bucket challenge, and had a massive drum that took two men to lift and carry, they dumped the water on me and I lost over half my extensions. Never again.

You should invent hair extensions that can survive a dunking of a huge volume of water. You'll make millions

Those goddamn cancer awareness things people do on Facebook. How do No Bra Day or sexy black and white photos raise awareness? No Bra Day seems particularly insensitive as many women who have had mastectomies would like to do the opposite to draw attention to that area of their bodies. It's hard enough to be hacked away and scarred in that area!

Or, mother of jaysus, people being called brave for shaving their heads so that they "know what it's like to have cancer". Firstly, get rid of your eyebrows and eyelashes because that is truly what made me feel like a weirdly featureless alien, not the head hair. Secondly, shaving your head won't give you any insight into what it feels like. Your hair will start to grow back straight away. It won't grow back in weird tufts. You won't have the laundry list of serious side effects that go with chemotherapy, some which will stay with you for life. You won't have the worry of recurrence. It's not remotely comforting to many cancer sufferers and it comes across like wanting a slap on the back.

What was no wrong with the no make up thing? Why did it get axed? It was surely one of the best ways of gaining, not merely likes, but actual hearts...

It's all right, mark zuckerberg is going to cure all disease with his Facebook monies.

To be fair, every ice-bucket video I saw did include a €4 donation to an MND charity and they all put up the number to text for others to donate. That's how the breakthrough was funded. Honestly, it's not a bad way to fundraise - it's a lot more attention-grabbing than a basic post saying that MND is a horrible disease and everyone should donate. If it's made a challenge, then a huge number will (and did) donate.

It's when that crucial bit about donating gets edited out that it's a problem. The first few no-make-up selfies I saw all had a screenshot of a charity donation. Then somewhere along the chain, that disappeared and became "post a no-make-up selfie in honour of everyone fighting cancer" - that's just narcissism and idiocy. But as long as people are actually donating, then what harm? I'd much rather that sort of collective fundraising than sponsored adventue holidays...
