Or they could! I am going to do Airbnb in the US shortly. The signing on process was so exhaustive that it would be difficult to slip through the net, and anyone who did not behave well as a visitor would find it very difficult to get another host. Similarly with dodgy hosts. I will report back in due course!

You must be thinking of couch surfing, the only person that gets rode by airbnb is the taxman! :D

I've always had a great experience with it. Stayed in a few places in Spain, Krakow, Paris...

OP, you can opt to rent a whole apartment/whatever for yourself if you're worried about sharing with weirdos.

I used Airbnb for the first time a few weeks back. Needed a base for a few days work on the Ring of Kerry. Because there were 4 of us, we looked for a full house to ourselves. Found one on the Airbnb site with no problems. There was actually a great selection. It was a nice house, had everything we needed and was exactly as described. Never saw the owner(s) once and they left the key out for us as arranged. 2 nights cost us well under €200 in total, it was a saving of €400 vs hotels in the area, plus we had a whole house to ourselves with scenery outside to take your breath away. I couldn't fault the experience and will definitely try it again.

I stayed with it in Vienna, Bordeaux, Lille and Galway. Every experience was top notch especially using it abroad as foreign hosts go more than out of their way to please you. We were greeted with bottles of prosecco, wine, beer and cakes by our hosts!! Just make sure to read the reviews of the host...

Also AirBNB have the best customer service I have ever come across!

Yeah used it a few times. It's grand. Read reviews before you book a place. Also Airbnb charge you a fee that isn't obvious until you book a place. Sneaky pups.

Yup used it last year in Rome got a gorgeous little place right in the centre of the city 5-10 minutes walk from everything.

Also used it in Galway earlier this year accommodation wasn't on the same level but fine nonetheless.

Would deffinitely recommend the site to at least check for something when your going anywhere you never know what gems you might find

Am sitting in an airbnb in Iceland right now... Great way to travel. Weve been travelling around for 3 weeks and we just book entire places so no sharing with weirdos... Bar herself!

used airbnb alot in the states and in spain. Great stuff. Cheapest if you are two persons / couple though. Recommend it. It's 10 times better than staying in a hotel. And no, nobody's weird. It uses a solid rating system, so you cant go wrong if you stay in places that has like hundreds of only positive reviews.. fool proof

Yeah, great experience but never shared with any people that actually lived there.

Buenos Aires, Croatia and booked it for Edinburgh coming up.

We used it in Iceland for a friends wedding and rented a whole apartment. Was very handy, and slightly cheaper than a hotel, but we saved loads of money by cooking meals that we wouldn't have been able to do had we stayed in hotel. Freedom to come and go at any time was great too.

Owner had good reviews and was grand. He had milk and bread stocked up, and even picked us up from the bus station and gave us tips for what to do/see in Reykjavik.
