I have about 1800 to spend, I need a car with a small engine 1/1.1 and these two seem to crop up a lot in my budget range. Which would you go for? Or is there something else I should be looking at for that price range? I saw a 2006 Kia Picanto for sale down the road for that price but I have no knowledge of Kias other than the Picanto is butt ugly. I am willing to get over that though if they are decent. Any advice?

Neither imo. A Yaris is much better than either imo but €1800 won't buy you a 06. My second choice would be a Fiesta but again €1800 probably won't get you a respectable 2006 example.

If you could stretch your budget a little:

Or if you are happy with something smaller like the Picanto then the Toyota Aygo is worth a look at:

Same goes with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, those and the Toyota Aygo are identical except for the styling and are all made in the same factory.

Hyundai Getz is also worth a look at, very reliable little car:

Thanks for taking the time to write all that and link. I'm really liking the look of the aygo/c1/107. They will definitely be going on my list. I had thought of a yaris but the budget just won't stretch high enough to get an 05/06. Thanks again you've changed the direction of my search and I feel like I kind of know what I am looking for now!

Within your budget, I have to second bazz26 on this.

An alternative that sprung to mind however was the Fiat Panda of that era, it's quite a competent little car this, and you should be able to find a 2005/6 within your budget.

Another one would be a Citroen C2, might be harder to fetch one in good condition though.

Thanks guys, I was actually just going to ask about the colt. I saw one this morning that looks like it'll be worth a look. I've seen a few fiat Pandas in my price range but Jesus they are ugly little things <shallow>

Ugly, but extremely practical and reliable... They weren't made in Italy :)

The FIAT Panda is actually quite fun to drive.

The Fiat Panda is a good car and fun to drive, power steering gave problems on the early models though.

A Renault Clio is worth looking at too, despite Renault's poor reputation at the time, they rarely get it wrong with the Clio. The new model came out in 2006 and would easily be the most modern and safe supermini launched at the time:

Ok, I concede they do look practical. I'll not exactly be getting envious looks no matter what car I pick up with my price range/requirements. There is even an 07 in my price range, I am becoming slightly less shallow.

I had an old Cleo yonks ago and it went out in a spectacular cloud of steam. Kind of turned me off them. It was really old though. Maybe a '95.

Could happen to any old car for any number of reasons so I wouldn't rule one out based on that experience.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. I ended up getting an ugly ass panda! I never would have considered it if you hadn't haven't mentioned it. My street cred is in tatters but you were right it's not a bad car ;)

Not among people who actually know anything about cars it's not.
The Panda is a great little car. Horses for courses.
