VW Golf 1.4tsi DSG Engine Stuttering

    Howya lads,

    Wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what's happening with my car

    It's a 2010, 1.4tsi Golf (160hp, with the twincharger), GT Sport with DSG
    I only bought the car about a month ago, but recently i've found the car starts to stutter and lose power under hard acceleration

    The other day when I accelerated the engine management light started blinking, the EPC light came on and the car went into limp mode
    I pulled over and turned off the car, gave it a minute, and when I started it again the lights were gone
    The car still stuttered when i got up near 3k rpm

    On the way home this evening I put it into semi-automatic and noticed when I hit around 3k rpm it wouldn't accelerate and further until I moved up a gear

    My thoughts are it could be a couple of things;
    Throttle body
    Turbocharger
    Clutch Plates

    I have 1 year warranty with the car, so will be dropping it into the garage as soon as I get a chance

    Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what it is?

    No point in guessing before a diagnostic scan is done.

    If you have a 1 year warranty you need to talk to the garage, it could be something simple enough like plugs or coil packs but until it's scanned there is no point in guessing.

    I'm not familiar with the later twin charge tsi engines but the earlier ones are notorious for stretching the timing chains, what mileage is on your car?

    Belt or chain driven?

    @NeilW - it's on about 84k miles now, was on 82k when I bought it

    @grogi - chain driven

    Here's your answer....

    The valves might be already gone, take it to an independent Vag specialist asap.

    If acceleration dies off at around 3k rpm then that means you aren't getting any boost from the turbo, so when the supercharger disengages you are left with nothing.

    The usual cause for this is a small solenoid valve on top of the engine. It's a cheap and easy fix.

    The stuttering could be caused by a number of things. Lots of these engines suffer from it and there are multiple possible causes, from the cheap fixes (spark plugs, fuel filter, dirty throttle body) all the way up to more expensive fixes (injectors, stretched timing chain)

    Thanks George, sounds like it's the valve causing the trouble, will try get it sorted replaced over the weekend

    Hopefully it's only something small

    I'll keep ye updated

    Well I got the car back today from the garage

    Two ignition coils gone which were covered under warranty. The garage warned me that if two were gone the other two were likely to go soon so got them done too at my own cost and labour for all 4 was covered by the warranty

    thanks for the advice lads

    How difficult is it to change an ignition coil in those motors?

    Coil failures are just so bizarre, each time they are different and the car drives ok at certain RPMs. Glad you got sorted out.

    Ps George, when are you going to open a Dublin Franchise...
