LECA

I'm in the process of restoring an old cottage and I've decided to lay a limecrete floor using LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) as a capillary barrier/insulation layer. The only trouble is, I can't find anywhere in Ireland that sells LECA or anything with similar properties (low capillary/high insulation value/breathable).

If I ship from the UK I'll be paying 50% again on material costs just for transportation.

Does anyone know of anywhere in Ireland where I can source it in bulk? I need about 5 cubic metres.

    Thanks.

    Sounds a bit like vermiculite??

I don't think vermiculite has the low capillary value of LECA - the idea is that 100mm or more will effectively stop moisture being drawn upwards through the ground whilst still being breathable. I can't just put a DPM down as it's an old cottage with solid stone walls - so that would be a recipe of major rising damp.

I met a guy at the selfbuild show a few weeks back who I think supplies the LECA. I'll PM his details.

    Hi Danjken

I sent you a pm with some info, you might already have but no harm.

We are in the same situation.

    Hi Danjken

    That's great info.

    Where are you based?

If a few people got together and ordered in bulk it would save even more.
