Temporomandibular joint disorder, anyone suffer from it?

Whats the best way to treat it? been to the dentist ..she suggested a mouthgaurd that i use at night to stop teeth grinding, but she wants me to go to a hygenist first - €80 before making a mould for the gaurd - €200.

And if that doesn't work i need to see a specialist another €200

    ..i say F... that!

so i went online the other day and got one of these ...anyone use them any good??

btw - is muscular ointment like volturol beneficial for it ??

would you buy something off ebay for any other medical condition? Probably not.. so i dont think buying something for TMJ is going to help either..

No you will find that non custom mouthguard either unwearable or unwearable after a short time. Night appliances for TMJD have to be well retained on the teeth, comfortable, hard on the bite surface and have a customized bite patter build into them.

The only thing more expensive than getting a proper one is getting a cheap one and then having to get a proper one.

but these do, you put them in hot water for 30 sec and then bite into them giving a near perfect profile of your teeth

...i've been wearing them at nigh-time for a week, no problem

Look they are a load of crap, if your happy thats fine but they are having no therapeutic effect and may be doing har in the long runm. Serious athletes dont use boil and bite gumshields because they are crap, serious grinders or TMJD people would not use boil and bite splints. They are not customized.

I make a loss on splints in my practice and I charge 400 euro. They take a lot of time, materials and adjustments to get right. If I would use boil and bite ones I would.
