Whats the difference between Skywards miles and Tier miles ? I have 8450 skyward miles and 5950 Tier miles, I have to go back to Australia again in march. What knockdown in price could these give me on my next flight?

Skywards Miles are used to buy free flights or upgrades while Tier Miles are collected to help you move up membership tiers (silver& gold etc)
The Skywards miles will drop once you use them to pay for a flight or upgrade.
To be honest i don't think you will be able to do anything with 8450 miles. I think that's way too low to buy or upgrade but you can check on the emirate website.

About 45,000 skywards miles are needed to do anything meaningful, like booking a one way flight or upgrading to business class... Australia is a two sector flight, so probably even more. Like the previous poster said, tier miles allow you to progress through the grading system.

The big advantage of the program is for frequent fliers to get lounge access and to use the business class desks/skip some of the hectic queues... Others might get the occasional benefit, but it's kind of addictive and does a good job in getting people to keep using the airline.

It cost me 39,000 miles to upgrade to Business Class in January from Dubai to Dublin.

You can use ‘cash and miles’ to book any Emirates marketed and operated flight.
(This excludes, for example, Qantas flights with Emirates flight numbers or Emirates flights with Qantas flight numbers.)
You can redeem anything from 2,000 miles
You can only reduce the base fare and not any element of taxes or charges, so it is impossible to get a flight for literally no money
The redeemable miles and tier miles you receive for the flight will be reduced pro-rata to the portion of the fare which was not paid in cash

I was just looking at a flight and reducing the price with miles came up as an option at the end.

2000 miles (the minimum you can spend) equated to a reduction of €14.50. 30,000 miles would reduce the price by a bit over €200.

It worked out for me a couple of years ago... Got a one way ticket at a huge discount from a friend of mine, but couldn't get the return at the same rate, so spent 45k miles for the second leg... Only time I've spent miles... Most people use them for business class upgrades
