    Hi all,
My significant other has a milestone birthday coming up and has recently developed an interest in watches. I'd love to buy him a decent one but have no idea where to start. My budget isn't huge(around 8/900). I remember him talking about some sort of pilots watch a while back, no recollection of which though. From trawling around the internet this could be a Flieger? Its a while since he's mentioned this style though. Am I mad to consider buying him a watch when I'm so vague with details? Are there any good sites to look at? Would any of these do gift vouchers? I'd prefer to buy an actual watch though. Would appreciate any guidance on where to look or watch suggestions for my budget. Thanks in advance!!!!

I don't know a lot about watches but my husband dropped some serious hints about this watch for his 40th.

It's a lovely watch, he's since gotten a divers watch from them since.

Everyone is different and you may well be able to select just the type of watch he wants.
But watchs are such personal things....and there are so many elements to picking one that he may like.

My wife knows exactly the type I like but she would not attempt to get me one as my taste is fairly particular and a small thing like the wrong hands would put me off.

Would you consider taking him shopping for a watch on his birthday? Make a day of it, a shared experience looking for his watch present?

Steinhart are fantastic watches for the money. But it's still €900. If he's interested in an IWC and never heard of a Steinhart then he may be disappointed. I'd try and sus him out a bit first.

Laco do nice Fliegers that wouldn't break the bank, but I agree with the others that it is a bit of a personal decision. In particular with Fliegers there are type A & B dials that look quite different and appeal to different people. There's also a lot of debate about logo vs no logo on a flieger.

lots of food for thought here, thanks! We're heading to Cork for a weekend in a few weeks. Maybe taking him watch shopping and for a nice dinner might be a good idea. Knowing him, he won't want to let me spend that much on him though so that's why I was kind of hoping to pick something in advance. Any advice on where to look in Cork? Or just the bigger jewellers?

Keanes will probably have the best selection of the premium brands anyway!

the thing with fliegers aswell is that they can come in all sizes....up to a hefty 47mm....so it can be a risky buy if you don't know what size watch suits the wrist he has

You would be mad to buy while guessing what he likes.

I know it will ruin the surprise but tell him what you are planning and get his input is my opinion.

Does he talk to any friends about watches. You could ask them to find out has he mentioned any watches to them in passing?

I'm from Cork but if spending cash on a watch Hour Passion in Kildare Village is the only spot imo for your budget unless the internet is an option.

You'll get zero value in Keanes imo at the €900 ish pricepoint.
