I just reviewed the NCBC catalogue and I must admit i was more that surprised that Goulding Man o Man was being promoted as carrying the myostatin gene & this was called out as a positive.. crazy that an AI would promote a non characteristic of the breed as a positive.. Appreciate that Ai companies are commercial organisations but really questions how some bulls are selected.. as I would have assumed that the breed characteristics should be one. Really hope the societies de register this Bull and stop promoting this behaviour.. If farmers want double muscle then use a BB.

on a separate point I saw the same animal as a calf and he looked a poor calf...interesting that the photo used is that of a calf eventhough he is now 18months old

I think it's up to the breed society if they want to discourage a particular trait. The angus cattle of today came from some ancestor breed of cattle which were selectively bred for particular traits. In time they became the black cattle we know today.
As we move into the future angus cattle will continue to be selectively bred for the more desirable traits. Ultimately if sufficient pedigree or commercial farmers decide that double muscling is an undesirable trait in Angus cattle the trait won't be seen as pedigree breeders won't breed the animals or have a market for the animals.
In my opinion it is not up to the AI companies to decide whether certain traits are desirable or not.The market will decide that. The culard charolais are an example of cattle not recognised by the breed society but have a place in the catalogue and are highlighted as not suitable for pedigree breeding and if the angus society take a similar position the double muscle angus may become a "culard" angus.

as a comercial breeder, I don't give a fiddlers about breed characteristics. If i can get a double muscled, polled bull with 1.9% calving difficulty you can be dammed sure I'll be using a few straws!

Same here. It's the reason we cross breed anyway to try and get the best from each.

if he breeds calves like himself you won't be getting much in the mart...

Most AA in the world today can be traced back to one breeder's Bulls from Scotland. Roughly 200 years ago if I remember correctly.

The AA finishes readily but if they could kill out bigger and at a higher grade I would have more of them. The Poly has a fanclub that is over deserved in my books, even though there is merit.

If one man, helped start them, then one man can help change them.

I don't know if his CD will be 1.9% if he crossed with a continental heifer carrying the mycostatin gene ..........Id say it will be coming out the side door
