    Hi Guys,

Have been looking a few Passat's and just wondering what peoples thoughts are with the 1.6HDI 104BP and a 2.0
What's the 1.6HDI like on the motorway or is the engine just too small?

    Thanks

I presume your talking about the B7 Passat sold from 2011 to 2014. 2.0 litre will be alot nicer especially with motorway driving. MPG on the 2.0 litre would probably be better on long runs too as it's under less stress. However the choice in 2.0 litre versions is fairly small in this country. R-Line v Highline is really down to what you want spec wise. The R-Line would have more sportier details whereas the Highline would have more creature comforts.

Thank you for the information. Yes both are 2013.

2013 Passat Product Guide attached which gives you a low down on the standard features for each model.

R-Line is a bodykit and a couple of nice extra's, on top of a base model. Does look good, but not a patch on the full Highline spec, especially if comparing a 1.6 R-Line with a 2.0 Highline.

1.6 can be very frugal, but if you spend a lot of time over 100km/h the fuel consumption on the 1.6 really drops off, whereas the 2.0 doesn't suffer as badly at higher speeds.

Most of the B7 2.0 Passats here are UK imports, a dealer may tell you it is a Highline but the UK Highline is not to be confused with ours, which has a better specification. Given the choice the 2.0 would be a far better bet, but if you don't tow or regularly drive with a packed car, the 1.6 does the job.

What kind of fuel economy would you get on the 1.6. Is there much difference between 1.6 and 2.0 in terms of fuel economy?

I had a Passat CC with the 2.0 litre engine and easily got 50mpg from it on my regular runs. With the less powerful 1.6 litre I'd imagine fuel economy would not be as good as the 1.6 would have to work harder in a car of that size and weight. The CC was never available in 1.6 litre but I'd image the regular Passat would be similar.

That depends very much on the type of driving.

I've driven both a few times on my daily commute (124k round trip, mainly M1/M50) and the fuel consumption is pretty much the same between them.

As I'm in rush hour traffic, the M50 isn't much above 80km/h and the M1 100km/h for most of it, and at these speeds the 1.6 is better than the bigger engine, but when traffic clears and you get to nudge it up to 120km/h the consumption on the 1.6 goes up at an astonishing rate, but the 2.0 is nowhere near as bad.

What speeds you spend most of your journeys at will answer which is going to be the most frugal, but with very little between them I'd always try to find a decent 2.0 as it's much nicer to drive overall.

Besides the Xenon lights on the Irish Highline over the UK Highline; what differences are there between the two specs?

I am currently looking at UK spec Sport (with parking sensors), Highline and Executive.

I was surprised to see any Irish spec car be higher than the UK; Xenon lights seem to be rarer in the UK for the B7 Passat.

Would you be able to compare the Highline and Sport seats?

The B7s I have sat in have been Highline and damned comfortable. I was only briefly able to sit in a UK spec Sport model and I could not judge.

Irish Highlines lost the Sports seats for the B7 that the B6 used to have - they were great seats, but the Standard Comfort Seats they got instead were pretty decent.

Presume the UK Sport model had the Sports seats which are better than the standard Highline Comfort Seats, but it depends what else is standard on the UK Sport model as to whether the better seats make up for it.

The UK Sports generally lack parking sensors but I have seen some with them, so I guess Parkers.co.uk didnt know that they were an option or something.

No heated seats or leather. I will have to have a proper sit in a Sport model as I would like to have options more open if I go to the auctions.

Irish HIghline Passats only got xenon headlights along with rear led lights, as standard from mid 2014 when they upped the spec on them as they were making way for the new model in 2015.

I have never plonked my ass on a nicer seat since driving the B6 Highline! Even my GS doesn't come close not to mind the A4..

Those UK spec R lines are fairly bland on the inside OP with keep fit windows in the rear and awful cloth seats...

They introduced an Edition R model here too in 2013 or thereabouts, it was based on the Comfortline afaik. Body kit, rear darkened lights, flat bottomed steering wheel and R-Line front grill. Still not a patch on the spec of the Highline though.
