Moving from Turas Nua to college

Hi all. I am hopeful someone here can point me in the right direction. My brother who is 22 has decided to go to college. He left school before completing his leaving but he has been accepted on a plc course. The problem he is having is lack of funding.

He has changed his payment over to back to education allowance. His payment had remained at €100 and not increased to the higher rate of €160. He has been told he can't get the susi grant as he is on back to education. He has also been told he can't apply for vtos funding even though it is a vtos course.

The reason seems to be there is no progression from Turas Nua to Education. He is finding it difficulty to pay the course fees understandably as his income is so low.

We have approached the VDP with no luck and the local partnership is there any other source of funding we are missing?

He's loving at home at the minute with my parents who are both on jobseekers.

    TIA

Well his rate should be increased to €160. He needs to follow up on that. He cant have VTOS and BTEA together.

He can receive susi but not the maintenance portion of it.

That's what I assumed but he had been told no grant at all.

He would gladly give up his BTEA for VTOS. It was the lady in the adult ed centre that runs VTOS that suggested BTEA when he went to her he was sill on the Turas Nua scheme.

    Thanks for the reply

According to the lady I spoke to in cic this scheme is very hard to get off and into education. Their remit is to aim for employment only. Has anyone else had this issue or am i the only one struggling? If you have no qualifications how can you ever get a job!!

I wouldn't see the course charge as a barrier. The ETB I work in has this set at €120. Charges do vary, but won't be much more . There is also the levy on top of this of €200, but if your brother has a medical card he'll be exempt.
