Where do you buy your fuel from

My local topaz is where I get my diesel but lately I'm not getting the range I used to get from a full tank, I've lost 100KM so I'm going to try a different fuel station first before I check the engine filters.

Everything has been as normal, Tyre pressures, servicing, carry weight, city/motorway driving.

Any reputable station. All the same in my opinion.

All diesel is the same here...we get wintergrade derv into the ports and that's what all stations use.

I buy wherever is cheapest and closest.

I have no set station and will fill up at the nearest pumps whenever I go below a quarter tank. Usually a Topaz or Applegreen.

Usually Tesco, closest to home, huge 16 pump forecourt so you rarely have to que, spotlessly clean, pay at pump facilities, open 6am - 12pm, great spot imo.

I've started noting fuel brand on my fuelly account with the Civic as I would occasionally use Applegreen and Topaz, just to see if there will be a trend of better of worse fill ups from certain sites, although I highly doubt there will be.

I try to stick to a garage that gets lots of customers so the fuel isn't sitting there for years getting contaminated, would never fill up in a back and beyond place with 2 or 3 pumps.

Today I got my diesel in Tesco and 2 weeks ago it was Applegreen and before that Topaz. I don't find any difference between the different stations as I get 2 weeks out of each tank wherever I buy it :)

I get mine from TOP on the Old Airport road in Dublin. It's consistently the cheapest around or close to it, has pay at the pump (doesn't take cash at all), the low pressure/car pumps are always quiet and it's never been closed when I go there.
would never fill up in a back and beyond place with 2 or 3 pumps.

Do you think maybe those places order smaller amount of fuel because they don't want to pay for fuel that will be sitting around waiting to be sold?

A mechanic friend told me years ago that Topaz were the only petrol stations that filtered the fuel twice , at the tank and at the pump. He always told me never to buy anywhere else.

Most filling stations will be getting fresh fuel once a week .and tanks are sealed.

Two weeks out of a tank? Surely not a great way to compare.

There's a big place off the M1 north of Dublin (sorry can't remember the name) where they haven't disabled the pump handle autofill clips. I couldn't believe it because I haven't seen that for years. I would go to any garage that still has these working.

I don't know why most places disable these.

So dumb asses don't leave the pump in the tank and then drive off AFAIK.

    €55 in Topaz
    €55 in Tesco
    €55 in Applegreen

I keep a record of my fuel consumption (petrol) and the place I buy it from. I only visit branded garages and make calculations on my spreadsheet, recoding mileage, MPG etc. They're all the same, no branded place is better or worse.

Usually Maxol, the pay at the pump machines are great if you don't want to be stuck beside someone in the queue doing their weekly shop and a the lotto.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Mister Jingles

Emo across from St James, one of the cheapest around. I try my best to avoid the north road in Finglas which is one of the most expensive in Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭Bigus

Any where they don't ask me for a fuppin "have you got a loyalty card" " would you like a loyalty card "

So I avoid Topaz like the plague ,plus I inherently dislike monopolies .

Wherever is closest when the light comes on simple as that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime

I buy petrol anywhere, doesn't make too much of a difference in a micra

For the diesel saab, i avoid all applegreens including the ones they own that serve their coffee but have a different garage name.

I'll mainly but diesel from topaz, maxol, texaco and esso ( which are topaz now anyway)

Amber and campus, i don't use but i know feck all about those places .

Maxol. Habit from the days of the ST, but I have filled the Golf up in a Topaz or two at times, it's definitely not as picky as the Focus was.

Or even worse, just stick the filling hose in, open the valve and start texting / playing with their phone - then they have a coronary when they go to the till and it goes "it's 85 Euro, sir!".

Anyway, I know the old argument "all fuel is the same here", but the Alfa (petrol) really, really hates Applegreen with a passion, it literally runs like old dried sh1te on it; Similar story, although to a lesser extent, with Tesco and most other "white pump"/unbranded ones.

On the other side of the spectrum is Maxol and in more recent times Topaz seems to have improved a lot (at least in Dublin).

I've been using Tara oil recently. It allegedly has magic particles which clean my engine to give me more miles / cleaner engine.

Also, prepay pump, very clean, and fancy wipes for your hands afterwards.

Their pumps give you the weather forecast! what a time to be alive!

Esso, sth link in cork, its consistently the cheapest, and, cos I've a Topaz fuel card.

I also give my diesel a shot of 2ehn, I've noticed a quieter engine with it.

As for mpg.... meh.. while fuel is affordable, I leave the car in sport mode, and the auto box pushed left.

I'm gonna enjoy (relatively) cheap fuel while I can.

I bring a paper clip, to keep the pump on auto.

Because I pay by card, I always fill to the brim.

Don't see the point in putting in €5, €10, €20 at a time.

    Juice up and go.
You're gonna use it all anyway, so why waste time regularly stopping to juice up.

    Just fill to the brim

I have bought from them the last few months/if not year. Very competitively priced.

€50 fills my diesel for 2 weeks, 300km per week. Kia CRDI.

    I avoid Applegreen diesel .

I know others say there is no difference but l definitely get less out of a Applegreen tank of fuel ,roughly 40/50 km less per tank (55 litres) .

Find the same with the caldina, it's very picky on juice (factory map is for 100 octane I believe) runs fine on maxol fuel, put some esso in a while back and it ran like a dog, it could have been something else but I have just used maxol since and it's been fine.

Shame we can't get 98 here anymore :(

But most people don't; I rarely fill it up to the brim since I don't use the car daily and, depending on the month, a 50 euro fuel-up might last the entire month "reserve light-to-reserve light". I do know people who fill like 5 or 10 Euro, maybe might let you drive a while on a 0.8L :)

I'm going into funny territory here but...a full fill up on the 159 is 70 litres; That's like having a passenger on the back seat. I actually swear I can feel it on the car's handling/performance :D

I don't give a flying rat about fuel consumption, my very lithe alfista-tuned right foot produces an "interesting" 6.9 Km/L reported by the OBC, but for those of you who do...carrying a full tank around will probably affect your figure a bit, probably in the range or 0.1/0.2 Km/L ;):D

I suspect I have a similar issue, recommended fuel by Alfa Romeo back in 2005 was Shell V-Power, which is 100 RON in Italy...anybody knows if those "octane boosters" they sell are any effective?

I was wondering if he should try an octane booster. But I'm now wondering how effective they are too.

Found with my last two cars that applegreen fuel makes them run not as smooth, they felt kinda jumpy on acceleration. But only if I filled with applegreen, one car was petrol the other was diesel.

Never had an issue with any others, Topaz, shell, GreatGas, BP etc ... could be a coincidence but I have a feeling it wasn't.

Do you notice any difference using it, I know it was only a cent or so dearer and almost the same price for a while as the regular black stuff?

I always try and get it if there isnt anyone at that pump

The car seems to like Topaz diesel, so thats what it gets, unless i'm running desperately low, then it's a race to the nearest branded station

Mine too, it hates Apple green for some reason.

The Esso on Ushers Quay if I'm around the area, it's by far the cheapest I've found. Otherwise the spiffy new Maxol in Mulhuddart.

    Always topaz .

My mechanic showed me petrol from 3 local stations , let's just say you could see the difference .

The local topaz, but that's more to do with the donuts than the fuel.

Heard on the radio this morning, that Topaz add a special additive to their fuel, and on the above reports seems to be pretty good.

I think I'll stick with the Xmile from Tara Oil though, for the price of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

Isn't the gist of it that they (almost?) all add some additive and that any X miles more claim is based against raw no additive petrol?

You'd get suckered in by the likes of techron etc after reading enough forums alright.

I suspect there is variation in the raw product coming in and that accounts for sone of the "not running quite as well as the last tank" maybe more than other things.

Entynol all fuel company's add it just some in different percentages than others basically and the all brand it something different ie topaz clean fuel Applegreen call it ultra I think texaco called it techron

I used to work for Applegreen and honestly il tell you the fuel I used to take in came from either the topaz, top or esso depot in either Dublin or cork port that's what would always be on the loading dockets the drivers had yes was Applegreen branded truck tho but that's what the docket I had to sign said this was a few years ago

Maybe the added more ethnol or less I don't no but with my car as I've said I just fill up wherever is handy as long as it's branded when I need fuel and I've never seen any difference in any of them but maybe I don't notice enough :)

The Topaz additive is not ethanol, all petrol has 7% ethanol.

What Topaz use is Keropur, it's made by BASF, and Topaz have exclusive rights for it in Ireland.

As for it giving an extra 3% mpg, well that's when it's compared to untreated fuel.
And as far as I know, all petrol sold has some additive added to it.

So that 3% gain wouldn't be seen in reality
