Heating large L shaped room

We've just bought a house the has an L shaped kitchen/dining area and living area (sun room). I expect this to need quite a bit of heat due to being a large area and also due to the windows in the sunroom.

My preference would be a wall mounted insert on the corner part of the L shaped room about 3 foot off the ground as this would be the dining area and I would like it visible above the table.

    So my questions are:

    1) Gas or electric?
    2) Would an insert give out sufficient heat or would a free standing stove be better?
    3) Due to it being relatively high on the wall, is a lot of heat wasted?

Any other tips would be welcome. Thanks
